You know you will probably find the excitement of the tooth fairy coming enough without it being "wow". My kids leave their tooth in a little pouch that gets filled with chocolate gold coins, some money and glittery stuff. Make sure you set a reminder in your phone cause I know plenty of "tooth fairys" that have forgotten! We are losing teeth at such a rate that I have to keep a box of "supplies" at hand!

One thing we do do is Daddy sneaks around in the back yard near their windows with a little set of bells so it sounds like the tooth fairy is outside just as they are nodding off. DS nearly wet his pants the first time he heard "her". That was the best thing of all and cost nothing - just the power of imagination and belief!

I probably wouldn't do anything too out there that might raise alarm bells when the other kids at school don't experience similar...!

The letter was a huge hit with my SS when he lost his first tooth. He went home and told his mum all about it. He has still got it now in his treasure box. He lost his first tooth close to easter and, not wanting to write another letter from the easter bunny so he could match the handwriting the tooth fairy told him that easter bunnies cant write cause their paws are too big. He got a real kick outta that. You could always get them to dust the window sill with flour or similar and add fairy footprints later.

Just don't use red glitter. I saw a photo once where someone did a tooth fairy trail and it looked liked the fairy had been massacred!

Use big glitter pieces - like what you glue on stuff not the dust glitter. It ends up in your bed in the morning otherwise!!

I don't really have any ideas, but your post made me remember a lil story..

My DD who was 10 at the time knew the truth behind the tooth fairy, so one night after her brothers tooth came out she came up to me and said...

"I know what we should do, lets find a moths wing, put it under his pillow then in the morning tell him he ripped the tooth fairies wing off because he tosses and turns too much!"

"well Mum, how else are we going to teach him not to toss and turn all night?! It's annoying to sleep with!"

I stuck with glitter and money and told her she can do what she wants when she's a mother... but I hope she doesn't go with an 'injured' fairy scenario lol
