Should be a sticky. Programs like this should be seen in order to quell the notion that drinking in pregnancy is acceptable, like smoking, when it's just not.

They say in the article that the zero alcohol safe thing is not widely known. I might be really nieve but im into pregnancy number 3 and my motherhood years span with my first being born back in 2007. My point is back then and even now ive always been told no amount of drinking alcohol is safe numerous times. Why is it that this message isnt getting across then? To me its not like its a suddan revelation?

Miados, not sure what other hospitals do but when I attended antenatal clinic I was told that 2 drinks were "safe" although they quickly backed that with "but zero is preferable". Perhaps the message isn't being properly delivered? Or that our very pro drinking culture makes such messages look trivial? From my perspective, I find a lot of information regarding pregnancy confusing at times. Again, the same hospital I go to provides a smoking area for mothers. I honestly don't get that.

Hmm, me neither, although my daughter was only born last year.

That said, as far as I'm aware the evidence is that there's no safe level, not that any drinking is dangerous. In other words, there is no evidence that there is a limited amount you can drink which has no negative effects. There is not, however, evidence that drinking tiny amounts does damage. Given that there's no known safe level, the recommendation is NO alcohol on the basis that it's better to be safe than sorry.

Now, plenty of people (including myself) tend to figure that a tiny amount here and there PROBABLY won't do any damage... in the same way that being in a city with pollution, eating anything other than a perfect diet etc. will PROBABLY not do any major harm. Different people though would have different ideas on what that tiny amount may be, which of course could cause problems.

I guess on top of that, there may be people around who genuinely aren't aware of the damage that alcohol can cause during pregnancy. Itll be interesting to see more about why that is since, as you said Miados2007, is seems very clearly known within my social circle.

I think you hit it on the head renn, your right everthing ive been told is zero is best everthing ive read justifies that by saying because the amounts vary and they dont know a safe amount so best not to have any.

It really also surprises me that you have a smoking section for expectant mothers? I work in a few hospitals and ive never seen that? But then again im not a smoker so ive never looked either.

I hazard a guess she just means a designated smoking area in general - and that expectant mothers are among those who smoke there, I would be hightly doubful if it was a specific area for only pregnant women to smoke.... :-)
