Mrs Mac, your gp will be talking about the nuchal transluency test. It is a screener for Downs Syndrome. It gives you a risk factor ie 1 in ??? but does not say definitely if your baby will have it. If you are high risk you will be offered additional testing. You have to have a blood test in a certain week, and then a scan at a certain week where tgey will measure the fluid behind the neck. Some people choose not to have it because sometimes the results can worry you for no real reason. The risk factor at age 40 is about 1:87 based purely on age so our risk is already increased. Hope that's helpful. Have you retested?

It is a Cape Town thing, I asked to use pessaries but my nurse told me that 'their doctors prefer the injections' when I told my Australian specialist he laughed and said the pessaries did the same thing.

I think it might deliver a more consistent dosage Angel over the pessaries... That's what I've heard anyway.

Springy, great result! And no OHSS! Bonus!

mrsmac123 my fs also suggested that I have that test done but my dh and I decided against it because if the test proved to be positive for Down Syndrome, we would not have terminated anyway. So we decided it wasnt worth the risk of miscarrying the triplets.

Why does it risk miscarrying? The test? Is this what my mum calls amniocentesus or something? Wher she had 2 kids over 40 and big needles into her uterus? If you get a good ratio does that mean you can ignore the other tests like that?

DH is worrying already about it all...today listeria.., so cute though he admitted that he googled what it looks like at 4 weeks heh really he is making me uptight though just sent me a link about some still birth stats for ivfs...we are going to sizzlers on sunday and its no salad bar for me somhow without dad wondering why as have not told them

Anyway I dont think I will be telling DH the chances of downs because of age

mrsmac123 I am sooo sorry for the confusion that I have caused. I was getting the Nuchal Translucency test (which is a prenatal scan) mixed up with the Chorionic Villus Sampling ( CVS) which involves taking part of the placenta and analyzing the genetic makeup of the tissue.

Yes Mrs Mac, the amniocentisis is the needle in the belly which has a risk of miscarriage. That would only be recommendedd if your ratio comes back high risk from the screener. I was high risk this pregnancy 1:149 (need to be 1:300). We chose not to do the amnio and see if there were any markers on our 19 week scan, which there weren't. It was a very anxious time and I am still a little concerned although I'm now considered low risk after my scan. There is a lot to think about and it is quite a confusing time. Rest up Mrs Mac and take it one step at a time. We went to Sizzler this week, and yes I avoided the salad bar too.
