Mrs Mac, your gp will be talking about the nuchal transluency test. It is a screener for Downs Syndrome. It gives you a risk factor ie 1 in ??? but does not say definitely if your baby will have it. If you are high risk you will be offered additional testing. You have to have a blood test in a certain week, and then a scan at a certain week where tgey will measure the fluid behind the neck. Some people choose not to have it because sometimes the results can worry you for no real reason. The risk factor at age 40 is about 1:87 based purely on age so our risk is already increased.
