Default Have you experienced discrimination or homophobia during your pregancy/birth?

To those of you who have had children and received prenatal care in Queensland... Have you experienced discrimination or homophobia from doctors/nurses/obstetricians etc.?

Are you concerned that this may happen to you?

To answer your question, we haven't at all so far. We've had a very difficult pregnancy with lots of medical involvement and everyone has been great. Fantastic even!

Well, me and my wife reside overseas, but are planning to stay in Australia at the time of the birth (my wife is Australian). We currently live in a very gay friendly country, so having a baby here isn't a problem, but we are both unsure of what to expect when it comes to this matter in Australia.

I hope nobody is offended by my question, and I don't mean to accuse Australia for being a homophobic country. But according to my wife, Australia is not so open minded about gay people as many European countries, and that's the reason for my question. It would be nice to know what to expect as we will be receiving prenatal care for the last months of the pregnancy in Australia and give birth at a hospital down there.

It's nice to hear that you have received good treatment, Jl81, and I hope you’re doing well now.

I haven't had any issues with discrimination/homophobia since living in Queensland. I'm currently 24 weeks pregnant and have a fantastic medical team that support me my sexuality has never been an issue.

Lillian, I've so far only had dealings with the fertility specialists, but he has been great, never an issue about same gender. Only positive things to say at this point, were just another couple like anyone else.

We had a very horrible experience at a hospital recently when DP had a missed miscarriage. They wanted to do another ultrasound just to confirm bub had passed away, even though 2 other scans said it did. The nurses and sonographer wouldn't allow me to be in there with DP but let the previous patients husband in with her. It made a very horrible time in our lives even more traumatic.
Everyone else was lovely though and our fertility specialist is the best!

Not really, we did have a sonographer once who was very abrupt when she realised we weren't sisters, but she also might've just been a grumpy woman.

Everyone else, from the fertility clinic to my midwives, have been wonderful.

Oh knock knock penny I'm so sad to hear that you and DP had to go through that. That would be hard enough without added difficulties.

    What hospital was that at?
