I second a Birman. They are the best cats ever!!! They are quiet, soft & soooo affectionate. They also get along well with dogs.

If you're getting a rescue cat, try a tuxedo cat. My mum has a recued tuxedo cat (really my cat but I couldn't take her when I left home) & she is an inside cat. One night mum left the back door open & she got out, but she just sat at the back door. Mum has an outside cat enclosure too & the cat will just walk from the back door to the door of the enclosure without running off. She was about 6 months old when we got her. She's also quiet & affectionate & gets along well with the dogs. I miss her (I live interstate).

They are quite "dog like" in their affection, and very social. If you introduce them to each other slowly and preferably when they are still young, they generally do quite well.

A friend of mine is a breeder and she has dogs and her Orientals. She socialises her kittens from day one with her dogs who are well trained and gentle with the kittens.
