I moved to Sunbury three years ago and had heard not so great things about it my whole life - I am reformed! I have 2 littlies and we love it - it's only a short drive down the Calder fwy to the city & airport is super close. The air is so amazingly fresh and I lived in essendon for 14 years - it feels polluted there when I go back now. There may be a dodgy element in Sunbury but with little kids I'm never around the places or at the times when stuff happens so it seems fine to me and I've never had issues. There's loads of services & stuff for kids in the area & it's not that far to travel to other suburbs. It feels like a country town but with the mod cons of an actual suburb. We bought a big block & built a house - heaps of value for money!

I'd definitely say Gisborne - about 25 mins from the airport and no traffic. Gorgeous town, lots of young families etc.... Macedon is also lovely, but about 10 mins further out...
Sunbury is still quite suburban and I'm not sure how many acre blocks are available for rent...
