    I'll answer them for him

    1. There would not be women in detention if the policy was not changed by Rudd.

    2. The PPL scheme is a waste of money anyway. So I'll be backflipping and getting rid of that policy all together.

    3. I have no idea what you are talking about. I think the taxpayer probably doesn't have to pay for awards to writers. If they are good, they will get a job or sell books.

    4. The Hon Ian MacFarlane, the Minister for Industry is responsible for the science portfolio. The names of Minister's were becoming ridiculous, for example, Craig Emerson was the "Minister for Trade and Competitiveness, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research, and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Asian Century Policy". You don't need a long name to be effective.

    5. You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that. Not all people feel the same way.

    6. You misandrist! How dare you talk about my genitalia like that! Just kidding. I am a volunteer lifesaver and fitness freak. It is much easier to rescue someone, and swim faster, wearing speedos.

    7. I guess there are no more questions?

As someone who broadly supports the bipartisan policy of stopping irregular maritime arrivals, I am shocked by the immoral callousness of that "answer". Placing people in detention means the govt has a duty of care to those people under any ethical and legal understanding. Humiliating women is simply not acceptable under any circumstances, and especially not when we have deprived them of the freedom of movement which would allow them to escape that humiliation.

    Absolutely agree with this, 100%.

What are you talking about??? There wouldn't be anyone in detention if it weren't for the change in policy. It is nothing to do with 'humiliating women'.

How they came to be in detention has absolutely no bearing on the duty of care Australia is legally and ethically bound to extend, which includes respecting the dignity of the person.

It also means providing humane conditions with adequate facilities, something that is also clearly not happening. The reporting from the media tour of Manus is deeply disturbing, to say the least. News Ltd ran this AAP report with the title Australia's real Pacific solution.

Are you talking about having to ask for tampons? What would you do if you went to the supermarket and there was none on the shelves - would you ask the shop assistant to get some more? Or is this humiliating?

What is 'deeply disturbing' about the report?

Ever had a period Father? Tampons need to be changed every 3-4 hours. Would I happily queue up at woolies to get a new tampon every 3-4 hours?

That is the information out of Manus. It is not what the Dept says is happening but it is what people on the island say is happening- they're in a better position to know IMO. One tampon for a whole period is unhygienic and dangerous. Why not just give them a box at a time? Why make them keep asking? Where is the respect and dignity in that?

Do you have a reference that I can refer to? I have not heard or read about this at all. What is the source of the 'one at a time' allegation? Is it more reliable than the Dept that says it is not happening?

Here's one. Is testimony from the people on manus more believable than a dept rep here? Well, yes. Who is there, experiencing and seeing it? You will choose to believe what you like F, and I have no doubt it will be the department, despite mounting evidence that detained asylum seekers are not being looked after adequately and their health and safety is being jeopardised.
