They were human beings. Children. Lured to their deaths by people smugglers.

Yes, that exactly what everyone is saying. You've got our number

It's called sarcasm, Father. You are banging on that you are the only member concerned about children dying. I was sarcastically saying that yes, you have us figured out, you "have our number" so to speak.!

...Gosh it loses impact when you have to explain it

Only concerned about them dying in waters close to Australia. If they die on the journey back, in Indo or back in a war torn country, then it's not our problem.

Yes- Apparently if they don't die in our waters we can pat ourselves in the back for our *life saving* policy, then wash our hands of them. I mean- yanno- it's not like they're Australians... (Please note- sarcasm)

This is what I don't get either. Sending them back in a rickety boat back to Indonesia isn't saving their lives. Not only is it not stopping the reasons they risked their lives to leave their homeland to begin with, but the boat just sinks in Indo waters, not Australian.

The libs can go on all they want this is about saving lives. it's about keeping 'outsiders' out of our country, and it's a bit laughable that they think people actually believe it. It's all rather disingenuous tbh.

Not trying to be argumentative but I haven't heard of any boats sinking/people dying after being turned around. They are taken off rickety boats, put on cheap but safe life boats and then escorted back (Indon authorities kept in the loop etc).

Are there any links to stories about people dying on the return journey?

Apparently a couple of people died in the jungle in Indonesia whilst trying to make it into town after being towed back.

I'm sure the libs would do everything in their power to keep any deaths hush hush and out of the media anyway.

Why is it that no one on here can provide a number of acceptable refugees per year?
Is 1,000,000 refugees a year acceptable?
Why is it so hard to put a number on it. If you were in government, you would have to budget and allocate funds appropriate to your refugee policy. How many would you budget for? At what point would you have to reconsider your 'open border' policy? Why is that such a hard question for you all to answer? Not one of you has done it yet.

Though it pains me to say this, I agree with some aspects of Father's position on this. The problem with irregular migration flows to developed countries is that if measures are not taken to stem the tide then there will be a geometric increase in the number of such arrivals. This is simply unsustainable.

I fully support a generous humanitarian program, which Australia has historically pursued. But this can only be undermined by increasing irregular arrivals, many of whom are in less need than the millions of displaced and suffering people languishing in refugee camps around the world.
