Default Childcare options for moving next year

DS is 2 now and in childcare 5/wk.

We're thinking of moving to Coogee area in 1-2 years, so he will be 3 or 4.

What are our options at that stage? I'm a bit confused about preschool and childcare and long daycare etc.

Also since we don't live there yet and don't have a date, I'm not sure whether we can go on waiting lists, or what to wait for.

Hi catbox, I'm in sydney too and have a DS who is 4.
    basically there is:
    1) family day care (small number of kids in qualified carer's house)
    2) preschool ( generally for 3-5 years olds often school hours 9am-3pm with set days for different age groups.
    3) day care/ long day care. Generally open roughly 7am till 6pm for 0-6yr olds and often run a preschool type learning program for the 4-6 year olds.
waiting lists vary but often 12-18 months. Put your name down at a few already that you like. If you get offered a place early you can always turn it down.
let me know if there is any other info you would like to know x

costwise preschool is less than daycare right?
but we really need at least 8-5 realistically.
I looked up some places, but info is scarce, all I have is a phone # for each and when I call I can get an app form but no info really...

Yes preschool is often technically cheaper per day but generally only open 9 till 3pm and doesn't always let you claim the CCR and CCB so my long day centre works out cheaper overall as I get more than half the costs back. We couldn't do 9-3 hence long day care but ours has a preschool learning program for the older kids room. Can you ask to visit any or are you too far away at present ?

it's still a long way away, we're not sure when we may move.

What makes something a Pre School / Kindergarten ? It is just a name?
The CCR cap of 7500 runs out for us after 3-4 months, with us paying $500/wk.

I think a preschool is only for 3-5 year olds with a specific focus on preparation for school learning program's. it's 9-3pm with no extended hours and they don't take under 3 year olds. Kindergarten is usually meaning the first year of primary school in NSW that is

Lol catbox, I think that means its a long day care centre (long hours, privately run, 0-6yrs) but within that they run a preschool type learning program for those over 3 yrs. And I guess the kindergarten reinforce the 'preparation for school' aspect??
