I never ever learnt anything to do with politics in high school

ETA: I don't have a clue what the senate or House of Representatives do or are or who they're made up of or anything like that

Most definitely shouldn't be compulsory it's just the governments way of keeping track of where you are and what your doing. They already know before Election Day who is going to be PM. It's an absolute joke. All votes aren't even counted , I did a postal vote this year and you have till the 13th to get it back to them so your votes don't even count.

No, I don't think it should be compulsory. This is the first vote I have actually cared about so I did it thoughtfully but in the past I have just ticked randomly mainly because I am uneducated and have no idea. This time I took an interest and got it explained to me in a 'dumbed down' form so I understood who was promising what.

I think that voting and politics should be on the citizenship exam that EVERYONE has to take.... Not just migrants. Then people should get their passport and right to vote/sit on a jury.

I agree, voting should be compulsory.
As should actually being enrolled to vote! My ex isn't on the electoral roll because he is in hiding from the CSA

    Sorry for the derail

I never enroll cause I don't want my psycho abusive ex finding me- so AEC tracked me down, enrolled me, and sent me out a letter stating so.

Wonder why they don't do that to your ex?

I don't know. Maybe they will track him down one day. I know you can apply to the Electoral Commission to be enrolled but not listed on the publicly viewed electoral roll in cases of escaping DV etc

Yep I know, it's meant to be really difficult to have it approved though so when I move from here will not update my details and hope the AEC won't either.

Our details shouldn't be on a public role for all to see!
I think the AEC needs to get with the times too-having to take time out of your day to go line up forever just to get your name ticked off a list is a massive PITA! Not to mention how environmentally detrimental all that paper used is!
Why not establish an online voting system ( or maybe that's not possible now that we have a liberal government). It would simplify the process for many and even if you don't give a damn, it won't take a great deal of time out of your day to do an informal or donkey vote.

I totally agree! I can't believe there's no online voting system in place?

Everything else is done online these days!
