I don't hate or envy them. A few members of my family are incredibly wealthy and tbh, it seems like a giant hassle.

I envy the things they have that I would consider one off buys though (a family home) but I can buy one myself, it just takes a bit longer.

I don't think it's an Aussie thing, it's probably a human thing! I'd say most cultures have an element of distaste for those considered wealthy or even just better off.

You often hear people say so-and-so has no right to complain because they're loaded or whatever.

Jealousy is an ugly but natural human trait.

Totally agree. Jealously is the worst trait imo. It really can turn ppl into ugly human beings

This. I was raised by a single mum on welfare but in the other hand had a father who was very wealthy. I am very fortunate DH and I are what we would consider very well off but we regularly yearn for the good old simple days. Simple house, simple car and simple finances. We have lost more friends the wealthier we have become, we don't believe we have changed, just have nicer things. Or as Oprah put it, "I am still the same person I just wear nicer shoes."
We don't brag or flaunt anything, infact we hide it and play alot down. We share everything with our friends and love having them share our lifestyle, we regularly help out charities and friends in need and are just all round normal people. As soon as new friends hear about our success it's 2 polar opposite responses - they are either happy for us it blame everything in life as to why they don't have the same and make out like it was all handed to us on a silver platter.

I think it total depends on the type of person the wealthy person is, personally.

For me, the likes of Gina and her ilk, they have no idea and seemingly no compassion or empathy for the little people.

But there are plenty of wealthy people who are not like this. There is a millionaire in Australia who does a huge amount for a number of causes and is a terrific guy. People tend to have a lot of respect for him due to his actions rather than his money iykwim.

I think you would definitely lose friends the wealthier you become. I certainly wouldn't consider dh and I wealthy but because we have investments ppl already get funny and say snarky comments out of jealousy. I have to a poibt where I think, you know what, you can't please everyone and if they can't be happy for you then they don't deserve to be in your life. Everything comes from a decision at the end of the day and often high wealth is with a bit of luck but often a lot of hard work through long hours, study etc so I think it is well deserved and ppl should be envious

I don't hate wealthy people, but I do dislike people who are ungrateful and ungracious with their wealth and have a superiority complex on their shoulder. Gina Rinehart I'm looking at you...

Only the ones who think they're better than others because they have more money.

I don't think Aussies hate people with money OP, I think they have a low tolerance for tossers who crap on about their money.

If you have to talk about money then choose your audience. It's crass to talk about your earnings to others who don't have so much.

It depends on their attitude. I hate Gina gina rinehart - is it because she is rich or because she is a totally smarmy idiot?? Maybe both. I think there is a certain type of rich person I can't stand, the self serving ones who think they are somehow more deserving than everyone else.

I like Oprah and Steve Jobs and Bill Gates- and they are really rich But they are/were into giving to charities etc. I am sure that the fact they are self made has something to do with their attitudes.
