Default Going to the GP re fertility

Hi there! I am 34 and I have an almost 3 yr old DS. We have had 2 separate attempts at trying to conceive no. 2 totalling 13 months altogether. My cycles are getting longer 37-43 days and I don't even think I'm ovulating. I have made an appointment to go see my GP next week regarding some fertility testing. My question is, what should I be asking for? I'm only giving myself til my next birthday(July) so I want to get some help before I run out of time. Thanks for reading!

If your cycles are that long, I would get a day 21 prog test and a scan done to check ovulation as a start. There are also other hormone levels that they can check at this stage, ie testosterone.
All the best, hope it is something easily fixed.

I did this about 6 months ago. Dr sent me off for a heap of blood tests. Not the 21 day but just to get all my hormone levels, thyroid, iron etc. She got DH to get his swimmers tested. She then gave me a referral to a fertility specialist to start ovulation tracking. Said going straight to the specialist will tell me far more than through her. I was a bit angry at first but once I got to the specialist I knew it was the better place to be.

They will mostly check hormone levels, thyroid etc. The day 21 progesterone would beed to be done later than day 21 though if u have long cycles otherwise it wont be accurate. U have to get ur progesterone tested 7 days BEFORE AF usually comes. So try & get the test done a week AFTER u think u ovulated so then if ur progestetone is high enough that will tell u if ur ovulating or not. They like to see a level of at leaat 20 - 30 to be able to support a pregnancy. U have to make sure u do it at the right time of ur cycle tho.

U can ask for these tests and u can try and read the results urself as from experience GP's dont go into alot of detail. Otherwise a fs would be able to do more thorough testing

Thanks ladies. I do suspect I am not ovulating at all as all the bd whenever I have fertile signs, which is at least twice a cycle, has come to nothing. I was very regular before Ds so something has definitely changed for me. Do you need to get a referral to see a FS or can you just make your own appointment? Are FS the only ones who can prescribe anything?

Yeah u need a referral to see a specialist. Some of them are a long wait so research who u want to see and ask ur gp for a referral. Maybe get ur gp to run the basic tests then take a copy of ur results with u to the FS

I phoned around FS to ask about price and wait lists then made an appointment and went to my dr and asked for a referral to the one I chose. Figured I could always cancel the appointment and got my dr to do the other tests while I waited. Also check as mine needed a separate referral for both my husband and me even though the test came back that his swimmers were fine.
