When we lived in inner city Melbourne DD1's daycare had heaps of books about same sex families and quite a few same sex parents.

Now we live suburban perth, what do you think? Never mentioned. I was talking about same sex marriage with her yesterday as it's something that will probably sway my vote on Saturday and I realised how much she has forgotten. A real shame and something I have to address.

I'll have to check out preschool. I know they talk about different families and some kids having two mums or two dads.

In fact when I left this morning they were playing in the home corner and the family had two mummies.

TBH I assumed it was a natural extension of the some kids just have a mum, some kids just have a dad etc books.

One might almost suspect that anti-liberal sentiment is more offensive than blatant homophobia given the nature of a few responses in this thread?

    Anti-liberal sentiment = worstthinginthehistoryofever

Homophobia = oh yeah, that's bad too.

Given BubHub's demographic is that really a thought-through decision? Mamamia is hardly just another parenting forum, it's a widely-read, widely-discussed collection of current affairs, articles and blogs.

If BubHub limits what its members can discuss to this extent, I'd like to gently suggest it needs to prepare itself for the fact they will discuss such things elsewhere.
Can't talk about this, can't talk about that. Can't link to this, can't link to that. Pretty soon all that will be left here is dross and drivel. Oh, wait.........

As for the flyer, totally disgusting. Being a male-female partnership does not automatically make you better parents than anyone else who doesn't fit that family unit. Otherwise there would be no need for DOCS would there?

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick here. It's not about "anti-Liberal sentiment", rather unjustly accusing the party of something abhorrent, ie blatant homophobia. Wouldn't you be upset if you were accused of distributing the flyer?

And to clarify, I think the title is still wrong. It's clear the flyer has nothing to do with the election as such, and everything to do with anti-gay marriage. It's not a politically endorsed message.

At the worst it's accusing the party of being homophobic, which, given their stance on gay marriage isn't a real stretch is it? I don't see TA's stance on gay marriage in stark difference to the message in the pamphlet do you?

I would be deeply offended if I was accused of distributing it but I'm not anti gay marriage.

Regardless, a few posters apparently felt far more strongly about the accusation that it might be a liberal pamphlet than the actual content, because being perceived as homophobic is worse than actually being homophobic?

I don't think TA having a gay sister makes him exempt from homophobia, particularly when his policies prevent her from having the same rights to marriage based solely on her sexuality, which one could only assume are based on his Christian values which prevent him from being morally able to grant her those same rights.

Yeah this, TA has said enough in the past for me and many others to think that he is homophobic.

He also has sisters, wives and daughters - but it doesn't stop him saying offensive things to women all the time.

To clarify I don't actually think this is about mr Abbott at all, I only mention it because the pamphlet is about labor and the gay marriage issue, and it's highly unlikely that the liberal stance on gay marriage could ever change with mr Abbott at the head, his personal beliefs prevent it, if it ever would have changed at all.

And (IMO) being anti gay marriage is inherently homophobic in and of itself because I'm yet to see a logical justification for it.

I know homosexuals who are against gay marriage. How do they fit into your rigid definition?

Fair point, as do I. On the basis that marriage is an institution which they want no part in anyway, which is quite different to the 'family values' line of the liberal party.

I don't think the liberals are aiming at that particular audience though somehow...
