Default For parents who's bub takes losec suspension.

How old and how much is bub on?

DS is 9.5 weeks and has been on losec suspension for about 5 weeks.

The last few days he is showing all the same signs of reflux as he was before the Meds. I'm wondering if his dose needs to be upped?
    He is completely miserable again

We have a doctors app next week and a paed the week after.

Are you still on the same bottle? When dd1 was on it the gp said to get the tablets and mix with water at home as the suspension loses its effectiveness quickly

Yup this. My DS is 11 weeks and we use the tablets dissolved in water, because the suspension loses its effectiveness after a couple of weeks.

But it could also be the dose as it goes on weight as well, so as bub gets bigger their doses sometimes need to be increased.

Well I asked for the tablets as that's what DD took but they said the dose they wanted to give him was smaller the half a tablet so needed to be suspended

The information provided by the supplier of the powder they use to make the suspension is it's good for 30 days. But other paeds have said it peaks in effectiveness as early as 8 days.

But yes it goes on weight so the dosage may need adjusting.

If you do change to the tablets it is extremely important not to crush the tablets as the granules need to be in tact and ingested to be effective.

Alternatively there is zantec which I believe is easier to give but haven't tried it myself.

Another thing to consider is foods. Not sure how old but if eating solids that can affect it. As can things you eat if breastfeeding.

Ds can't eat onion as it gives him horrible reflux but I have been lucky that nothing I eat as really affected him.

Hmmm, that sounds like a small dose. Ds has been on 2 mls since around 4 months which is 10mgs per day. He isn't overly big, lucky if he is 9 kgs now at 10 months.

    Hi waterlilly

My DS1 has reflux from 3 weeks old to 2 years.

We upped meds every 3-4 months but more in the beginning with weight Increase

I got reviewed after each growth spurt.

We also tried Zantac once he was a bit older with similar results without the cost or hassle of the suspension meds

    Hope that helps

Thanks ladies. I still had another script so went to the chemist and got the losec tablets and he is now going to take half a tablet once a day. The chemist was shocked that he was given the suspension at all and said the tablets are heaps better.
