    Default question about ovulation/lutal days

apologies if this question seems a bit simple, but i just want to make sure i get this 100% correct for best chances!! i'm trying to figure out when i'm ovulating and the best days to do the deed to get pregnant. i want to use the ovulation calculators but i am unsure what my lutal phase or lutal days are?? i want to start this cycle and my period is due to end in a few days!!

so if someone could please help, i would be so appreciative. here are my figures: i have my period for 6 days. i have kept track of my recent periods and my cycle is an average of 28 days. i usually get my period every 23 days, but this most recent was 22. and in past it was 21 and then 25, so that is how i got the average, hope that is correct in figuring the cycle. so how do i know my lutal days? they say the average is 14?

my last period started on 25 july, ended 30 july. this period started 21 aug due to end 26 aug. i just want to make sure i get the day i'm ovulating correct and what to know what the best days to the dance to hopefully get pregnant. thanks in advance ladies!!

I just want to clarify this for you. The first day of your period, the first day of actual bleeding is day 1. The average cycle is 28 days in total. From first day of bleeding until the last day of your cycle being the day before your next period starts.

So, based on that, the average 28 day cycle will be something like this
    Day
    1, start period
    6, finish period
    14, ovulate
Then the next stage is your luteal phase, which should be around 12- 14 days, which will be day 15 to day 27 of your cycle.

I think you are counting your cycle from the end of your period. Which could mean you miss your fertile window.

Forgive me if I gave you information you didn't need, I just read your post and I think you were counting wrong.

Oh and opk are great for pinpointing ovulation, as you're really only fertile for a few days in your cycle, you don't want to miss it.

thanks ladies who replied! i thought i was counting right, but now i'm unsure if i was. my last period in july started day 1 (25/7) ended day 6 (30/7). i am on my period now and so i started day 1 (21/8) and last day of period day 6 (26/8). from 25/7 to 21/8 was 27 days. i also kept tracked for the last 4-5 months and did the average and it was 28 days. so did i not count that right?? i am more confused now because i thought i had

i am not sure what day i ovulate, because i was just plugging numbers in those ovulation trackers without really knowing if i was doing it right . so i was assuming based on 28 day cycle, with my periods lasting 6 days and just using the standard 14 day lutal phase.

am i on the right track? i still don't get how to know exactly my ovulation day and the lutal phase specifically. i must sound completely clueless! yes, i should purchase an ovulation kit.

From what you've just said it sounds as though you are counting right.

    You have a couple of options to track your cycle a little closer;

    - ovulation predictor kits (there are pee sticks that you can purchase online, ebay is a pretty good site, there are also specific sites, sorry can't think of any off the top of my head atm. There is also the maybe baby saliva kit, i never quite understand how this works but you may find it helpful)

    - there is also temping. You either love or hate this method as you take your temp with an ovulation thermometer and enter the information into an app which gives you cross hairs to confirm ovulation. You have a temp dip when you o and the app waits til there is three days of a temp rise to confirm the day of ovulation. It may take you a couple of cycles be able to understand and read your chart. There are some threads on here which women discuss their charts and this will definitely help with understanding how it all works.

    - then there is cervix checking and keeping an eye on your cm. When your cm has the consistency of an egg white is when you are in your most fertile time. Understanding the position of the cervix also helps. I personally never could figure this out lol.

Some women do all of the above to pinpoint ovulation and their most fertile days. You work out as you go what is best for you. Ttc isn't as simple as most think it is. I used to think that all it took was one night of drunken fun and then BAM i would be pregnant. Two years of fertility treatment later, how wrong i was!

Best of luck with your journey. There's lots of women on here that are an absolute wealth of knowledge and are more than happy to share.

thanks munchkin! i think at the start i will stick to what i'm doing and checking my cm along with getting the ovulation predictor kit. maybe the next step would be taking my temp and trying to find the location of my cervix. those last 2 methods kinda freak me out at the moment haha. i guess start slowly and gain more knowledge and practice and then add more steps. thanks again everyone!

It doesn't really matter when your period ends. Day 1 of your cycle is the first full day of bleeding. Your cycle length is he many days until the day before it's day 1 again.
You won't work out how long your luteal phase is until you have an idea when you ovulate.
I highly recommend you use OPKs and really try to focus in on fertile signs so you can become more aware of them.

also by using OPK you can see how long your lateral phase is, it needs to as long as possible to help it be a sticky one, i O late and only had a short lateral phase so i took vit B12 to lengthen it, took 2 cylces but it got longer by 2-3 days and brought my O day forward too, worth a try,

Vit B6 would be of more use than B12 for lengthening luteal phase. But it's not a good idea to take a B vitamin in isolation as they all need to balance each other. A B complex would help. But I don't think there's much point in just doing that until you've established your cycle. OPKs and temping, using a tracking program, is really the best way.
