CTP is compulsory everywhere, but comprehensive or third party insurance isn't.

Not only do you need to buy another car for yourself, you have to pay for the other parties car (and what if their car is valued at 50k). Plus towing fees etc etc. You could be in a debt of $60,000 + before you can even blink.

    Then what do you do?

I'm sorry but I just think that's irresponsible.
If someone has a car worth 50k, I'm sure they will have their own insurance for accidents. My car is worth $2000, if I was to have insurance on it I will have paid what the car is worth in a year (P-plater so high premium)... DF will do what he did again with my current car, buy it for $250 and fix it himself. And everyone has CTP through rego.

Yes. We are saving for a bond for when we move. I also have some extra savings which I will keep for a rainy day. Not a huge amount but better than nothing!

I thought ctp was third party insurance. Are you saying third party insurance is compulsory everywhere? Then what is ctp?

Yes but people shouldn't have to claim something (and maybe lose their no claim bonus) because someone else was irresponsible not to get cover. And they will still owe the money to the insurance company I think.

CTP (as in a green slip) covers medical costs etc in case of an accident that sees someone in hospital. It doesn't cover the car.

But that's why they have insurance?? Not everyone can afford car insurance, and public transport isn't viable for everybody. My car isn't worth the money to have car insurance, simple as that.

CTP only covers the persons in the vehicle not the vehicle itself. If you are the at fault party in an accident and you do not have insurance, you are the responsible person to pay for the other parties repairs or replacement of vehicle.

Doesn't matter if you write off someone's 10,000 car. You have to fix your car, pay all towing fees etc for both parties and pay for their car to be replaced or repaired. So if that total bill came to 15k that's still a lot to come up.

Furthermore it doesn't matter if they have their own insurance. If they put a claim through their insurance, their insurance will pay for the replacement but then their insurance company will still chase you for the money. And you still have to pay the money because you were at fault.

If you had insurance of your own. Your insurance company would pay their insurance company. But as you don't, you have to pay their insurance company.

So you agree that ctp is an acronym for compulsory third party insurance? Why did you say that third party insurance is not compulsory?

Then don't insure your car, insure yourself for if you hit someone else's. you need to look into it, because like I said, my grandpa was hit by an uninsured girl. His insurance paid for the repairs but she is on a payment plan with the insurance company a year and a bit later because if you're at fault, you do still have to pay.

IMO if you can't afford basic third party insurance (I paid $30 a month for mine, peanuts) you can't afford a car.
