    Yeah... They recently did a study that said introducing solids at 4 months would help with allergy reduction... I guess I considered 4 months 'early'... How did your son go at 12 weeks...? My son is 14 weeks & I still can't imagine him eating, he seems too much of a baby still .. If that makes sense?

    Other than allergy reduction, is there any other benefits to introducing early?

    So my dd has had a lot of medical intervention.
    The advice given to me in the latest research was to start solids by 6 months. .. so if bub is ready at 4 months go for it. This has shown that it is possible that waiting too long can cause allergies but more so can affect the picky and fussy eating.

    Contrary to what most people think (me included until recently) is that eating solids is not instinct. ..everything involved with it from smell to swallowing to sucking etc must be learnt. Babies do not instinctively know how to eat solid food when it's given. . they need time to learn how to eat. So sometimes when we wait too long it can make the aversions harder to overcome. Not always bit sometimes.

    The most recent recommendation is still around 6 months , with all types of food to start then ( except honey) unless you have special instructions from a Dr - I would assume the main negative of introducing solids too early is that they may impact the amount of breast milk/formula baby takes in ( and still needs) and also stomach complaints ( gas/wind/diarrhoea ) if their stomachs are not mature enough to handle the food

    up until a few years ago they were saying no eggs, nuts, shellfish and other highly allergic foods until after 1 and sometimes age 2, this was proving to increase allergies not prevent them, now introducing all food at 6 months is supposed to help reduce the risk of allergies

    Oh okay... They had a story on 9 news about it recently that they said 4 months. I kind of thought the best way to introduce solids was to wait until they are showing all the signs of being 'ready' & then introduce at around 6 months. Or do people just routinely introduce at a certain time?

    I still thought there was certain things not to introduce. I bought the Annabel Karmel books & they have certain stages & certain foods to introduce at these stages. Would it be wise to follow?

    This is the latest Australian study published this year in April, breast milk/formula until around 6 months and then every food ( except honey) after that

    I find those Annabel Karmel books very outdated - since about 2009 with the new allergy studies being done is when the recommendations of all food after 6 months were done (this is when BLW became popular as it seems to coincide with all the current research )

    Read the guidelines from the link and try read the Baby Led Weaning book if you can as it addresses all the guidelines and best ways if introducing all foods, when your baby is ready

    DD1 we left til 6 months and I felt it was too late. She had shown a lot of interest earlier and in the end didn't swallow a mouthful of solids til she was nearly 10 months (never ate purées)

    DD2 we introduced at 5 months. No problems and no allergies.

    DS1 was 3 months on the advice of our gp due to severe reflux. Ate a little puréed fruit and veggies til about 6 months when I started introducing a broader range.

    DD3 is only 4 days old so will wait and see. I tend to go by what suits my babies more than anything else. Having an 8 year old and then subsequent children has made me realise theories on everything seem to change every few years. I do what works for our family (so long as there is no proven harm within those boundaries).

    Yeah... I'm a little worried about my supply when I start introducing solids.... I will definitely look into the baby led weaning...

    It's still a little while away for me... But has been lots of talk about introducing solids in my mothers group... So thought I'd get other opinions, I sometimes find it hard to ask questions without coming across judgemental. I'm generally a very curious person, so if someone is doing something different, then I want to know why & whether its something I should consider for my baby.

    I mainly bought the Annabel Karmel books for the recipes, I didn't actually realize it came with all the other information. So might have a read and take bits and pieces from it and see what works for my son.

    I've just started my 18 week old ds on solids on advice from my MCHN. She told me the new regulations are to start solid foods from 17 weeks to six months depending on the child.
    My son is still breastfeed and is having on "meal" at mid afternoon of pureed veggies or fruit. I don't think it has effected my supply as I always offer the solids 20-30 minutes after his feed.
    I believe he was ready constantly eyeing of our food and making chewing movements with his mouth.
    I'd defiantly speak to your MCHN I found mine to be extremely helpful

    I started my DS at 3.5 months cos hes was just a hungry bub. I was breast feeding and couldnt keep up. He was leaning to grab food off my plate at this age so i knew he was ready.
    I started with pureed pear, the pumpkin then apple then sweet pot. He was a pro right from the start. By 8 months he was eating what we ate...chopped up bolognaise and pasta, chopped up chicken, all fruit and veg.

    hes almost 3yo now and still loves his food. He had no allergies, is not fussy, is a regular weight and height and is developing normally. FYI, he was eating honey sandwiches at about 9-10 months. Same with eggs, cheese, peanuts and wheat.

    ETA DD was introduced at 4 months and she is the same.

    I really to believe that the later you leave it the more chance of allergies. Though, of course if you already have an allergy in the family i would wait.

    The reason they say not to introduce honey isn't because of allergies. It's because of the risk of children contracting botulism a disease that causes paralysis and can be fatal in young children.
