I'm absolutely horrified that a judge awarded this! What a joke! He wasn't starved, he was provided adequate meals. Our justice system is a complete JOKE, it's embarrassing! I can not believe he is eligible for parole next August (if I read that correctly) why aren't these scumbags marked never to be released?! Wake up Australian judicial system, harden up on the filth of the country!!!!! Gee I'm so angry about this!

How ridiculous As others have said, he was served halal options, they just didn't have halal meat in them. Now if they had strapped him to a chair and force fed him some pork ribs, or starved him for weeks or months I could understand. But he was fed healthy vegetarian food that fit the halal rules.

Personally, I think it's more than fine to provide gluten-free, lactose-free, nut-free etc meals for those who will get ill if they eat these things... but for those serving long sentences - suck it up and get what you're given. I believe that if you commit a serious offense then you forfeit your right to be picky about what you eat.

    Wondering what others thought...
    Yep agree 100%

I do agree. It is ridiculous. He was not forced to eat non halal meat. There's nothing non halal about veggies and bread. Compensation omg.

I actually loathe articles like that. They are written purely to stir up anger. Really ridiculous. I don't care what they eat in prison, it has no bearing on me.

    Stupid bloody media.

I believe this particular issue is a joke.

But, I do believe people should be given diet options which are aligned with religious beliefs.

i'll try and type my answer again......you guys have no idea what inmates get in gaol. The get a lot more than what you think. Yes people get vegetarian, lactose free, gluten etc etc. If they claim they need halal meals then they have to be approved then pay for it out of there own money. The get 3 square meals a day, deserts, fruit, cereal, coffee, tea and milk all provided for free along with all cleaning products, toiletries and clothes. They also get a form to fill out and that's like going shopping. The get a list of what they can buy and tick what they want up to $90 EVERY week. It has lollies, noodles, tuna, powered milk, toiletries etc etc. Old people in nursing homes do not get treated this good and have half of there pension taken of them for the privilege. inmates do not pay a single cent for water, food, electricity or clothes UNLESS they want something specific. Gaol is no longer a deterrent. Its a friggen holiday camp and the younger people seem to wear it like a badge of honour these days. and don't for a minute think they are missing out on anything. All different religions still get to observe cultural days and get special food for it.
