Default Need some hope - 6wk scan with gest & yolk sac, but no mention of fetal pole/hb

    Hi everyone,

Just having a bit of a down day. Had a scan on Monday morning which revealed a good looking gestational and yolk sac, but no sign of bubs yet or a heart beat at 6 weeks. I just rang the clinic which told me they dated the scan as 4-5 weeks, however I know that it can't be much sooner than 6wks as I tested positive at 10dpo, as I added 4 extra days for when ovulation actually happened.

I have another one booked, but it's not for two weeks and I'm trying to get an assignment done and not look like a neurotic mother. If it is another failed pregnancy I'd rather know sooner rather than later. Two weeks seems like a long time.

Does anyone have any advice (besides for me to stop worrying - that won't help), or positive stories of similar situations?

    Thank you!
    LT.

Hi LT---so sorry that you're worrying. I went in for an OB appt at 6w3d and before he even started to scan he explained that all he wanted to see was a gestational sac and yolk sac and maybe a fetal pole but that it wasn't going to be a worry if there was no heartbeat as he wasn't expecting to see one and I could come back the following week to check for HB.

I think it's a good sign there was a yolk sac but don't think I could wait two weeks for another scan to have anything confirmed either. Can you go in next week for a scan to look for a fetal pole at least? But I guess the downside to that would be there may be a fetal pole but still no HB and you'd have to go back again for that.

Do you have a private OB with u/s in office or are you having to go to a scan place every time? Did they do an internal?

When i had my first scan they couldn't see even the yolk sac or anything and put me in hospital for ectopic pregnancy, the next scan they could see the yolk sac etc but no fetal pole or anything like that, after about 20 mins they done an internal and made me go and sit on loo to pee as much as i could and when i got back they could finally see the heartbeat and fetal pole, appearently i retain a lot of water and was told because i was only like 4 - 5 weeks and the fluid i retained this may of been why the first scan hadn't seen anything at all. And on top of all that i had light bleeding.

So there are many reasons that they may not of been able to see it, i had never of thought water retention could of been one until i had it happen and every scan after whenever they have said i need to drink water i only drink half of what they say and everything is seen perfect.

    Hi Holly!

At the moment I'm still going through my fs clinic, as I have to change over to an ob for care later on - I booked in, but they don't see people before 10weeks unfortunately.

I'm wondering if I should book in at a local scan place and get a referral off my doctor - I'm pretty sure she would give me one. They did an internal and I looked up the sac sizes on the web and they seem to fit within the range quite well - so I don't know why they have dated it so young - probably because of no heart beat or pole I would imagine. They didn't seem like they were going to budge on the two-week thing.

That's a shame with the two weeks. Maybe see if you can get in earlier with your OB? Mine normally doesn't see patients until 10 weeks either but when his midwife heard my history she thought it best I come in as soon as possible for peace of mind and to work out a plan with OB to help my anxiety in this pregnancy. Being you have a similar history I'm sure your OB would understand why you would want to see him before 10 weeks.

I know its hard to wait but it's probably for the best as if you go again too soon there might not be any change. You could try and test with the digital pregnancy tests they should tell you at what level your hormones are and then if you test again say 5 days later it should give you a higher reading so you know the pregnancy is progressing however that could also backfire and stress you out if the reading is the same.
I had to go to hospital in the early stages of my current pregnancy (now 26 weeks and doing well) because I had a bleed and Im 0- I had to have a shot or rh anyway they did a scan and they couldnt see a fetal pole either, I assume I was about 7 weeks but they put me at 5 which confused me, still somehow everything was fine and still going well.
    best of luck op!!!

Unfortunately this only works to 5 weeks gestation, at which I already had bloods done that fit with that. Thank you for the thought though. I think I will just try to get an earlier scan next week. I did try and tell the receptionist that I wouldn't be 7 weeks on Monday, but they told me it had to be by LMP, not according to o - would have been so much better to have it next week - I've come across so many patronising people in the baby business who seem to think that most women have no idea.
