My hubby made a hoot cake for dd 1st birthday. It was two circle cakes and he cut the lower one in half on a curve to fit into top one then the cut piece he made wings. White eyes and heart he used orchard roll out icing from the supermarket and moulded it. Looked awesome. ImageUploadedByThe Bub Hub1376033999.909870.jpg

That is awesome!! Not sure if I should go with a frosting or try fondant. I've never used it before and I think by time I buy all the stuff I might as well buy a cake. My fav cake shop does a hoot cake for $80.

I made this cake for a playgroup party.
It really wasnt that hard to do. All i did was make a cake in a pyrex bowl for the head and another cake in a small round tin. I iced them with fondant individually the stuck them together. You could you butter cream which would be a bit easier to work with just stick the 'pyrex' cake on top of the 'round' cake and ice them together. Make the legs and wings out of fondant...its just like playdough. Then pipe the eyes.
The kids loved it and thought it looked pretty good too.

That looks so good!! Can you remember how much all the supplies added up to? Just wanting to compare to a cake shop one.

Same as anewme - highly recommended Cake2TheRescue. The beauty is that everything you need is sent in the box....including the box being used to actually bake the cake! You only need to add the wet ingredients.

When I just started making cakes, I made this one and it was super easy (this was the older model, they've updated them now as per anewme's link)

The cake cost me about $5 to make but i had all the ingredients already. The fondant cost about $15 (got a kg from the cake shop). Maybe all up about $30. But like i say i had all the cake ingredients (flour, cocoa, eggs, sugar etc). If you dont have all the ingredients it will probably cost more.
