    Default Dhea/Testosterone gel - thoughts please :)

Hi all, does anyone take dhea or know much about it? if so have had side effects from it?
what are your thoughts, my amh is at 6.9 which is low but not super low

Just came back from a review appt for our 1st failed IVF so wanted to hear other peoples opinions before picking up my script, I had heard of a few things to help egg quality and asked specialist about it and she said it u can take dhea 3 times daily - generally for 3 mths prior to an ivf cycle, she also mentioned otherwise testosterone gel can be used for 1 mth prior to a cycle

I am also a bit concerned as Im sure my specialist wouldnt have even said anything about it if i didnt bring it up, sometimes u seriously feel like a no, i kept asking questions, lucky i was prepared otherwise im sure we would have only talked for about 15 min

Hi hun, I was on DHEA and TestoGel for three months before my latest cycle. I have normal AMH, but for some reason was getting extremely bad fert rates and slow embies, so I wanted to try this and my FS approved. I also added Saizen growth hormone to my cycle while stimming, and guess what? FIVE blasties, and a BFP after a double transfer. I am now 8 weeks pregnant and I absolutely believe that DHEA was a major (if not THE) factor in achieving this. Definitely worth a try. Good luck!

After everything we have been through this cycle we are throwing the book at it DHEA melatonin human growth hormone double the dose of fsh my old FS used to use on me lipiodol flush endo scratch and nk cell biopsy and will have a intralipid infusion at epu. Way more progesterone support feldene and I have lost 8kg and am training hard to have a low weight and high fitness to be as healthy as possible.

We reached the stage if they suggested it as an option we couldn't say no this cycle. So we have ordered an ivf / ICSI/ picsi cycle with the lot!!

Thanks Sariele and congrats so happy to hear u got your BFP, will give the DHEA a go, handed script in just have to wait for it to be made up, hearing more positive than negative results so worth a try, anything to help right? My AMH is 6.9 so low but not too low thankfully. Gl Bellavista, when they do picsi, what do they do compared to the normal icsi? our next cycle will be in sep/oct

@Booboo78 -- from my signature you can see what I am taking... My FS prescribed DHES 150 mg 3 times a day, CoQ10 200 mg twice a day, Melatonin 3 mg (before bed), and Inositol powder 2 mg twice a day. Didn't think it was going to do anything, but I must say I have been feeling much better over all. Have been taking them since March where we were abler o get 4 eggs (unlike the first attempt of zero eggs collected). I just had bloods and Ultra Sound taken today for the start of our third stim cycle and I already have 11 follicles growing... so I am very excited... I know it is early days, but to go from 4 follicles to 11 in a few months I think it is pretty fabulous.

Also DH is on Arimidex (which is an oestrogen surpressor - keeps his body from converting the testosterone to oestrogen) and that has been a HUGE improvement as well... he as went for WAY below normal of 4.2 (his lowest) to 14 (which is on the bottom edge of the normal range) and his sperm has gone from .3 million to over 3 million in less than 5 weeks. So we are hoping that for EPU day it is way up there.... The other thing FS was happy about is that his motility went from really low about 12% to about 72% (huge jump there as well). So FX we have gotten a formula for success...

All of the other medication I am on you can purchase over the counter or have it delivered in from iherb.com (pretty cheap and quick delivery)

    Hope that helps some.

Also ask for High Calcium Medium if you haven't already and if your clinic has it... Usually you have to have a less than 25% fertilisation rate to get it, so check with them... I am going to get FS to do it for me this time as well. Everything can help.

I think many specialists are reluctant to recommend DHEA because several well-controlled studies showed no improvement in the pregnancy or live birth rate in treated vs untreated patients. There is a good meta study/review of the evidence that describes the results of the studies to date. There were some studies that suggested benefits for some women, but the design of the studies meant there could be some bias in interpreting the results. Some studies had better outcomes in treated patients, but the results were not statistically significant (meaning you couldn't say with confidence that the differences were not simply due to chance). If you search on Pubmed, you can read about some of the studies.

That said, after a few dismal cycles my specialists were happy to start throwing all sorts of "unproven" treatments into the mix. We eventually got our take home baby. Who knows if was one or all of the cocktail of drugs, or simply that elusive golden egg-super sperm DNA combination that produced a embryo determined to stick around regardless? I think that once you get to blastocyst stage, unless you are doing CGH you never really know if the BFN are related to the quality of the embryos or another factor.

@clbj I know how you feel... There isn't much out there to say it does or does not help.... My FS said that to me when she put my on the cocktail she recommended so DHEA, melatonin, CoQ10, and inositol powder... But I have went from only getting 3 to 4 follicles to now have over 10... Also with hubby being on Arimidex to help with sperm production and testosterone levels we are hoping this will be the magic time.

Good luck to all... Hope everyone journey is a successful one.

I think the really frustrating thing is that even the best studies will tend to lump groups of fertility patients together and so the results may or may not apply to your specific problem. This is even worse when there aren't a lot of unbiased studies in the first place. Say you take people that are poor responders or poor lining response, there is so much variability in the causes or combination of factors affecting fertility for each patient. What's to say that the results in the study do or don't apply to you? The frustrating thing is that taking a try and see approach is just so costly - time (which many of us don't have on our side), money, emotions and side effects that impact our lives day to day.

We were "running out of options" (FS words) when we had a "natural" pregnancy sneak through (still supported with a cocktail of drugs). We were waiting for ethics approval for cGH and a "new" untried treatment at the time. Had I fallen pregnant on the next cycle with all that in place I probably would be here singing the praises of the new treatment when in reality, I'll never know if it was one or all of the treatments I was on at the time, or just good luck.

That's absolutely no consolation when you are undergoing treatment though. I've been there and remember the gut wrenching anxiety about every scan, every test result hoping for a better outcome. I think that at least mentally/emotionally there is some benefit in trying something, anything when what you are doing at present isn't working. We just have to have some faith that the FS can guide our decisions so at least the treatments we are on are not harming our chances, even if we aren't sure if they are helping.

I wish you all the best and hope you can report back with some good news soon. I hope your treatment journey is short and successful and doesn't impact your life too horribly in the meantime. Take care.
