I'm not disagreeing with you, but unfortunately its not so simple either. I wish I could remember the figures drilled into my head whilst on hold to speak to someone at DIAC one day. I can't, but the number of visa applications lodged and processed each day is god damn ridiculous. Most visas have a wait time for processing of up to 12 months. If this were the case for aslyum seekers/refugees they would be stuck in their countries for another year or end up in processing centres somewhere which they're already not happy with

The whole point of seeking asylum though is you don't need a visa and you don't do it from your country of residence.

I feel so very sad inside for these poor people.

I also feel very angered by some of the Facebook comments I've read today - absolutely disgusting!

Yep that's what happens when people have no hope, no interviews have been undertaken for their applications and you're stuck in limbo for up to 3.5 years, your mental health takes a dive and you become desperate.

What a wonderfully simplistic way to look at it.

Furthering that you cant register as a refugee from your home country so you have to get out safely, to a country that is safe and has a functioning UNHCR office. Given the state of some of these countries that is not allways possible. Its an outdated policy from the 1960s given the large number of internal refugees now.

Then is it back to square one of them being unhappy in processing centres while the government decides who's legitimately an asylum seeker and who isnt? Its such a rough cycle, I don't think there'll ever be an easy solution

News flash polly's, we're an island, there is always going to be boats!

I want the best for every human being on this planet, but thats slightly aspirational!

To be honest, our issue with 'illegal' immigration numbers is ludicrous in comparison with land locked countries! We have to get over our obsession with 'the boats'. The deaths in transit are heart breaking, but people will do anything for a better life. I'm not sure we can stop truly stop them.

To quote a 'bleeding heart lefty'....

"To say that Australia will not assist (refugees) under any circumstances is a very substantial statement - it is a change of Australia's values. And I believe an abdication of Australia's responsibilities and....an abdication of basic humanity." Malcolm Frazer

What about those who are not refugees, but using our weak borders to gain entry under a false claim to be a refugee? You are quite naive to think that they are all legitimate.

I for one think that this is quite a good idea from Rudd and am impressed at how quickly he managed to develop this deal with PNG. It should hopefully reduce the pull factors, which should see boats, (and as a result, deaths) reduce.
For those that have the view that we should be helping them if they arrive by boat, we do have an annual figure for refugee immigration. 'Stopping the boats' will not reduce the numbers of refugees that we accept to live in Australia. It will, however, enable those unfortunate families that have been stuck in refugee camps around the world for years (some decades) to gain entry to Australia. The people who do not have $10,000 per head to jump on a boat. I would much rather help those who cannot help themselves. I have much more sympathy for them than I do for a middle aged man who flew into Indonesia with a visa-on-arrival, to then pay a smuggler substantial amounts of money to finish the journey direct to Australia. I am all for helping refugees - but if they are legitimate, they should be happy (I guess they can be disappointed if it is not their 1st choice of destination) regardless which country they end up in, as long as they are free from the threat that they were fleeing.
