In PNG 51% live on less than $2 a day. Life expectancy 55. 61% without access to clean water. They can take #refugees but Australia can't?

How do you propose they focus on the boats and the smugglers? Targeting the smugglers must be pretty hard when their customers Rarely blab. Dismantling the product that the smugglers are selling is more likely to quickly stop the dangerous boats.

    - although.. Perhaps Rudd is implementing this solution with the expectation it will stop the boats (I believe it will). In which case only a few unfortunate people will be sent to PNG (while the message gets through). Sacrifice a few to save many..?)

Genuine question, does anyone know how these figures compare to the different places refugees are coming from?

Not sure. Just wanted to add those figures mean diddly squat unless you look at them in conjunction with the cost of living (which would be much lower).

    Wow, just wow. How disgraceful.

Yes something does need to be done. To many asylum seekers are dying, men, woman and CHILDREN. But to deny then any chance of living here and palming them off on a poorer country who won't be able to provide them with the opportunities we can, fail Rudd. Massive fail.

I'm really upset and shocked by this.

Yeah but sending a few to a country from which we accept people as refugees from because of the volatile and violent circumstances?

All of a sudden offshore processing seems positively cuddly!

Genuinely not sure what you're asking and what the relevance is... Are you saying that if the place they've come from is worse then they shouldn't have anything to complain about?
