What do you think a sex worker does exactly? I know l'm being a bit blunt but it's what their job involves doing.

I don't necessarily think they lack intelligence. I'm aware that many young women become sex workers move on to careers in many different fields after they finish uni. But l don't agree with the path they've chosen to get ahead ( no pun intended)

I am astounded at the lack of intelligence and empathy shown in this thread so far but anyway..

I think the reasons why a human being gets into the sex industry is multi faceted and involves often the persons background, it may involve past abuse, neglect , trauma or loss. I really doubt that any child dreams of the day when they can service unknown people for cash..

And don't get me started on the huge amount of people who are literally forced into sexual slavery. Don't think it isn't happening here in Australia. It is..

I really feel sorry for some of you ...I really think you need to re examine some of your attitudes.

The way you talk about sex workers is just plain rude and disrespectful. You clearly think you're above them... What the hell gives you that right?

Sex isn't a huge deal to some people. It's not the be all and end all... So I don't see why it's a huge deal and impacts other people's lives so much?

I agree with a PP, it shouldn't be shameful but other people make it that way. It is a job, and one that you would be able to get job satisfaction from.
Would I care if my parents were sex workers? No
Would I do it? Yes, and not just to pay the bills.
Would I tell my kids? Yes, but only when they were old enough to understand. I don't tell my kids that I spend my work days cutting up dead animals because they wouldn't understand, not because I am ashamed of my work.
And VP if my husband died I would not be eligible for centrelink because we have too much property but it is property that wouldn't sell well and I have a huge mortgage to pay so I would need immediate income.

Sex is just a part of the job. A private escort spends the majority of her time answering phone calls and emails, keeping track of her schedule, website, photo shoots, advertising, grooming, traveling. Often intercourse doesn't happen at all. I once got paid hundreds of dollars to have a hot chocolate at a cafe and walk around the city with a virgin who would pay women for their company and never to touch them.

    No, I don't think it's shameful.
I believe it needs to be regulated better and be legal, so STDs are less prevalent, they have access to counselling if needed and so they're safer, not on the street alone or working in illegal brothels.

I hope that anyone who feels sex workers should be ashamed of themselves doesn't watch p.or.n.

Seems to be a huge double standard in that it's okay to watch two unknown "consenting??" adults having sex for money but it's not okay for two consenting adults to have paid for sex privately. Eh?

It is so hard to answer that question. I don't believe prostitution is shameful but i do think it obviously can be a very dark industry, especially in developing countries.

There are so many reason's why a person might become a prostitute and without knowing those, I don't know how you can judge. I don't find anything shameful in a sex worker in a legalised brothel who has good conditions with health checks.

I find it so strange in these threads that prostitutes are judged so harshly but the men who frequent them are not. There would be hundreds of thousands of Aussie guys who pay for sex. They aren't a black hole, they are brothers/fathers/husbands/boyfriends/friends. A lot of men would not admit to going to a prostitute. If you judge sex workers harshly then you should judge the men who use them just as harshly.

But there are also sex workers who work in brothels where sex would be the main part of their job.

I don't necessarily see myself as a better person than a sex worker, l just don't agree with their occupation especially if it was to pay off uni debt . I think many men that use sex workers don't have any respect for the women, so l why would any women put herself in a position to be treated like that for money?

If a women mentioned to me I real life that she was or is a sex worker l would not treat her with disrespect.

I have lived in a very busy Parisian streets with prostitutes everywhere. I can say that the money was going in their pockets, they were drugged up to their eye balls and blowing guys behind garbage bins.

I wasn't looking down on them, rather felt so disgusted by the police and social services doing nothin to help them.

But if there are people I judge, it is the customers. I don't care if they are after vanilla stuff or other thing. There is a million way to release sexual tension without having to use another person and feed a dirty industry. Dirty cause it lives off misery and fill the pockets of the mafia and other drugs network.

That is the real/main face of prostitution. Can anyone honestly tell me that they would be happy and encourage for their daughter to work in a brothel??

So many illegal brothels in Australia too, THAT is shameful of our country. I can't wait for the act of using the services of a prostitutes to be illegal like it is in Sweden.

Tough question, as the industry isn't standardised, people work as street walkers at one end and highend escorts at the other. Would I treat a sex worker with disrespect or disdain.. ...never.
Would I feel shame/ashamed if my daughter was a sex worker....yep, I'm afraid so. Just as I would expect her to feel if I was one.
