Is he a Burmese? I'm sure there would be a pet rescue group who could help you find a good home for him. It might take you awhile but you could try and find someone home during the day, then he might not feel so lonely. My Burmese hates being left on his own.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions. He is Burmese and we did try Feliway, two jars of it actually and it didn't make a difference. It's been a year now and he's still unhappy.

I did end up finding a solution. After reading some of the responses, I was writing a Gumtree ad in tears when I called my parents and begged them to take him because I couldn't bear to see him go to strangers. They agreed (previously they had said no but also didn't want to see him go to strangers) and I took him up there this afternoon. Remus knows my parents and aside from getting used to the new place, he seemed content up there. I'm so happy with this solution because my Uncle is home during the day as he works night shift and my parents are home at night so he'll have company all the time. It also means that I'll still get to see him.

You seriously think taking your cat out if its home environment is going to make his depression issues better?

Is there another reason you don't want your cat to live with you anymore (conflict with bub etc) because this just does not make sense.

It is really hard to rehome cats if they are no longer kitten age. Would you consider adopting another cat instead of giving one away?
