    Default Blurred lines

Just incase you don't already know, the song "Blurred Lines" is about degrading and sexually assaulting women. Here is a recent article about it and the lyrics in full.

As I was driving to work today with DS in the car this song came on the radio. Usually it's one I bop along to but after listening closely to the lyrics I was horrified. We have to change the culture of our boys. This is not ok. Im surprised that these songs are allowed to be played at this time of day.

There are so many songs out there that are just like that. I forget names. they have the catchy tune that draw you in but if you listen to the words you would be disgusted.

Well. The first time I heard it was on ABC Coast FM, they were talking about how he's compared to Justin Timberlake, how catchy is this song. They obviously didn't check the lyrics either.

I admit I've bopped along when I'm in the car. Those lyrics are pretty distasteful though. I never really 'tuned' in and haven't really cared if the kids are listening. We don't watch music videos so don't have to worry about that part, yet. Might rethink keeping it on now though, especially when the boys are with me.

But, isn't majority of pop music like that?

Remember Flo Rida with Whistle? Seemed like such an innocent, nice, laid back kinda track.....until you listened and went OH!!!

I can't take the song seriously ever since I saw the Jules Lund and Sophie Monk parody.

All pop songs are like this - Rihanna, Gaga, Pink, Katy Perry etc and that's just the female degrading songs coming from the FEMALE artists.

I prefer to listen to music along the lines of Adele, Florence + the Machine, Bastille, Mumford and Sons, Coldplay etc. Sounds like real music as well.

I have never really paid attention to song lyrics, I've never really cared. Now that I have a child (particularly a son) it has changed my perspective. Also, since such hate crimes against women are so prevalent in our society (Jill Meagher comes to mind) it worries me that our culture isn't changing.

This singer sang live on the Voice, mostly teens are watching that show, we are telling them that this language and behaviour in music culture is still ok.

Do you have any examples of women degrading women? I can't think of any that come to mind? Im not a huge fan of these genres of music but my impression of people such as Pink and Katie Perry were the opposite. It would be a huge shame to hear orthereise.

Lyrics dont bother me to be honest. I listened to Eminem growing up and I dont have an urge to kill my other half and stuff them in the boot of my car then drive to the woods and bury them.

My son and I discuss lyrics if they bother him. I forgot what song it was but he had an issue with something so we discussed it.

Its an incredibly annoying song... but personally i dont read the lyrics as being about sexual assault.. its vulgar anyway.
