Default Maternity care – Eastern suburbs Vic

    Hi Everyone!

Looking for some advice with the maternity care choices @ Eastern Health. I'm only a few weeks pregnant but need to choose asap so we don't miss out on what we want..

We had our first baby a few months ago but our experience will be totally different this time – Our beautiful angel was stillborn, she passed a few days before she we gave birth to her and I still cry nearly every day. I'm so excited to be pregnant again but scared and confused about what care we should choose or if we should go back to the same hospital.

We had GP care with our first because all the other “choices” were full – we gave birth in the Family Birth Centre @ the Angliss (well we were transferred to the delivery room for an epidural but she came before we could have it, then back to the FBC afterwards) so the space was really nice with double bed, spa and fit ball but I don't think they will allow us there this time round as were no longer considered “low risk”.

Has anyone birthed at Box hill? or both? and what's the comparison...?

Also is anyone aware of the ballpark cost of Public Ob care rather than GP or hospital care (bulkbilled)??

    Thanks!!!! My head is spinning....

Not sure what you mean by public OB care? Public is free

Have you considered a private midwife? I recommend Juliana from Mamatoto Midwives if you want to look at their site.

I'm pretty sure the family birth centres at the Angliss is now closed I'm due in December and it wasn't an option and I have done research and apparently the only one in Victoria is now Hartland and they are trying to close that too.
I was shattered as I really wanted to go down that road but now just have to ise the hospital.
I'm not sure what area you are in but I'm doing midwife care and I have all my appointments through Yarra Ranges Health. You see your normal GP until 12 weeks they give you all referrals for blood work and NT scan, book you in with the hospital and then you have your first appointment around 14 weeks at either lilydale Yarra ranges health or the Peter James centre in ferntree gully. You can call the hospital with queries or look at their website they have all the options on there. Good luck. Also really sorry to hear of your recent loss and hope you have a beautiful pregnancy xx

Ah, you mean private OB in a public hospital, not the system. Not trying to be pedantic, was just confused as the system is a lot more than just the hospital facilities for the actual birth and stay after.

    Good luck!

I saw a private OB and delivered publicly 7 months ago in berwick so close and I think after Medicare we were out of pocket $600. We paid $80 with roughly $40 back per visit so wasn't horrendous

Butterfly Ma... nope it really is closed. It is being phased out and those that were already booked in before march are being called to discuss care options. I'm not sure if that means those booked in to give birth after march still get the chance to use it if they were already booked in. But they are not taking bookings for it.

My GP didn't give The Mercy as an option but I'll look into it, thanks

And Meags - thanks that give me a good ballpark to work in, not as bad as I expected!
