Default NK cell testing - advice please.

    Hi all,

We are back on the IVF rollercoaster again trying for our second child. The reason for IVF is a failed vasectomy reversal.

We had 3 frozen embryos left from the stim. cycle we did in 2009 when we were trying for our first child. The first of these transfers (all day two transfers) in May resulted in a BFN and then the transfer of the second embryo resulted in a pregnancy with a good solid HCG level of 175 (tested two days early due to long weekend) which rose but too slowly and ended in an early miscarriage. We are about to transfer the third frozen embryo.

I am wanting to find out where in Melbourne others have been tested for NK cells?

My acupuncturist is strongly recommending I get tested for NK cells and has recommended Nick Lolatgis and his testing at Monash IVF. However my FS is with Melbourne IVF and said she doesn’t really believe all the fuss around NK cells so is not going to test for them.

I really respect my acupuncturist and my FS and my FS helped us fall pregnant with my first child and saw us through two early miscarriages so I feel caught as to what to do next.

Can anybody tell me if it’s possible to test for NK cells through a simple blood test?

I have heard that the test with Nick requires a sample to be taken from the lining of the uterus on a certain day of the cycle and a special treatment via a drip to be administered by him if high NK cells are found. Ideally I don’t want to go through Monash IVF and Nick as I’m with Melbourne IVF (nothing personal to Nick nor Monash just don’t want to move from my FS and MIVF) nor interrupt my IVF cycle with MIVF so I just wondered if anyone had any other thoughts on testing in Melbourne that they’d experienced.

I feel a bit caught between my FS and my acupuncturist’s opinions as both are highly regarded for what they specialise in so I’m trying to educate myself around the possibilities!

    Thanks!

    BB.

I've just read that there are blood tests that can test for NK cells - does anyone know if this is as effective as the uterine biopsy and where you can get it done in Melbourne?

no idea about how effective, but my FS just requested it along with a myriad of other blood tests as part of further testing after 4x failed ivf cycles with CFC. I've now moved to Monash - new FS ordered the tests.

    Hi BB,
Ive never heard of a blood test for NK cells. I had an operation which took a sample from my uterus, and they were above a normal level so had to take prednisolone(steroids) with my cycle. My Doctor tested after 2 fails, along with everything else. I go to Monash IVF and this happened a couple of years ago so maybe things have changed. If its as simple as a blood test go for it! Hope it works out for you.

Thanks emski72 and Sammy6 for your replies.

I'm guessing it probably won't be as simple as just a blood test as otherwise I'm sure my FS would go for it!

Just feeling like I'm trying to rule everything out that might possibly be affecting our chances after three early miscarriages in my history.

    BB.

Hello buttonbub. I've just found your post while trying to find information about NK Cells. I hope you don't mind me replying after all this time! Congratulations on your current pregnancy!!

I wanted to ask (especially since you are expecting!) did you get your NK Cells tested in the end? I've suffered 3 early miscarriages myself and we were just about to start trying again (naturally, not IVF), but I've just been told about NK cells (by my fertility-yoga instructor) and now am wondering if that's what's been going on with me.

She (yoga instructor) also recommended seeing Nick at Monash IVF, but we had just started seeing a new FS (also at Monash) after a pretty woeful experience with a FS at MIVF. This new doctor doesn't believe in the whole NK cell theory and is reluctant to have me tested. He hasn't said "no" and said if I wanted to they will do a biopsy and send off for testing (I'm having a biopsy anyway to see if my lining is normal as I have a T-shaped uterus), so it would just be a matter of them splitting the tissue.

Sorry, that's a long, winded way of asking if you had your NK cells tested, and if you found this test useful.

Also, if you have found out or have been told what a "high" range is. My FS said that they can count the NK cells, but there is no research out there on what is "high" or "normal". Very confused as what to do. I just want to get to the bottom of it all and avoid another miscarriage.

Would love to hear your thoughts/experience.

    Dany

Hi Dany, thanks for your message and I'm sorry to hear that you have experienced losses - it is so challenging. My specialist at MIVF also didn't believe in NK cells so we didn't go down that path. She did say that she would test down the track if I really wanted but that we should continue a few more attempts first. In our case I think that the embryos may just not have been chromosomally right and that's why we had early losses. So we ended up going down the advanced embryo selection path with MIVF which I'm glad we did as out of the 11 eggs we had and then 5 embryos we had tested, only one was genetically viable (that is the little bub inside me now!) The advanced embryo testing was an emotional rollercoaster as well however we felt it was right due to my age and I didn't want to go through any more losses if the reason was due to chromosomes. Sorry I can't be of any more help re the NK cells however if there is anything else I can help you with please shout out. Sending you positive vibes to stay strong, as positive as you can and for your little bub to hopefully be on board with you soon. Hugs. BB.
