Default Anyone been to Koh Samui, Thailand?

We are planning a trip to KS in Sept/Oct. We are planning to stay in Chewang beach and have been looking at Sareeraya villas and suites.

Has anyone been to KS and can recommend:
    What area to stay in
    A great 4 or 5 star hotel
    Fun activities

    Any help is much appreciated

We went 2 years ago with my then 9 month old. We didn't stay in a 4/5 star resort so I can't really help you there. And we stayed up at Boput, which doesn't have a very good beach but Chaweng I thought was too busy and not at all family friendly. We went down to the beach at Chaweng a few times but mainly used the pool at our resort.
We didn't do much, just swam and read and ate, but we did go on an elephant ride which was great fun and also visited one of the waterfalls. I think there's a butterfly place too, but we didn't make it there. Too busy lazing by the pool, lol.
Not sure how old your kids are, but just as an aside it's not worth taking a pusher/pram as there's nowhere to push them, and no-one has kid's car seats. Just as a heads up, but you may have known that already.

Thank you for the reply. We are planning to leave our kids behind for this trip, after taking our daughter to bali and Europe we thought it was about time we had a holiday for just the two of us.

Oh wow lucky you! Well then most of my post wouldn't apply. The elephants and swimming at the waterfall were good fun, though. We also had a couples spa treatment at Anansara spa at bophut. That was aaaamazing.

We have been twice, both times over NYE. We stayed on Chaweng the second time, as the first time we felt quite isolated from the hub, even though our resort was lovely. Chaweng is super loud at night, and Samui in general is in danger of becoming thrashed out pretty soon, I think. If you want solitude and luxury, then stay as far as you can from Chaweng. There is a loop bus that goes around the island too, so you can see almost everything should you want to.

Best activities are the elephant rides, massages/spa treatments, eating fresh seafood on the beach, swimming (Chaweng has jet ski, parasailing etc as well), and there's a day tour which isn't bad as well.

We stayed in Koh Samui and loved it! We were there for a relax as it was our honeymoon, so apart from the usual water sports, his and her Thai massages and heaps of eating, we saved all the energetic stuff for Chang Mai/Bangkok etc.
Occasionally we would go into Koh Samui town for a wander around the market etc, but it wasn't that thrilling to be honest (not compared with other places in Thailand).
The resort we stayed in was a luxurious 5 star resort called the Intercontinental Samui Bahn Taling Ngam resort situated high up on a hill overlooking the Ngam Taling beach and we stayed in one of the huge 3 bedroom villas on the cliff which had about 275 steps down to the beach! We had
the most wonderful time, the restaurants were second to none and the health spa and treatments .

I would highly recommend the western side of Koh Samui (Ngam)it was wonderful.

Thank you for the replies. I understand that cheweng beach is the busier noisier area, we and have considered staying in a quieter part of the island. However I found when we stayed in the more peaceful side of Bali (Nusa Dua) we ended up travelling into Kuta each day for restaurants, shopping, bars etc. this makes me think that we should stay in Chewang as we are obviously drawn to that sort of environment.

We went on an elephant ride in Phuket a few years ago and found it slightly distressing as we felt the animal was not treated very well, so we might give it a miss.

We have considered timing our trip to coincide with a full moon party on Koh phangan. We are not really into partying but thought it might be worth having a look at. Has anyone been to a full moon party?

Did anyone go on a snorkelling/diving trip or visit any other islands whilst they were staying on KS?

Hiya! I'm getting married in Koh Samui in August! We are staying in Chaweng too it's very busy an party central which I was a bit worried about but it is a holiday too so we wana have fun! My advice avoid full moon parties ESP in koh panegan (can't spell it) they are dangerous an full of kids on drugs we went an left after 30mins my partners first drink got spiked! Plus if you stay on the island you will probably be robbed or mugged it has a really bad rep and I saw it for my own eyes! We did a half moon party on the beach in Phuket which was amazing! If you are going to stay in Chaweng stay near the top end it's a 10 min walk to the central area it's peaceful and even though more expensive the hotels are fantastic! We stayed at KC resort an overwater villas before the views were brill!
