Default Have no idea what to do......

My 4 year old DD has started hitting/punching/slapping me when she doesn't get her way. It usually happens at the end of the day when she is tired and hungry but it always is when we are out in public such as when I am picking her up from school or when we are in a shop. I have tried to keep calm and just keep repeating "it's not nice to hit" or "please don't hit me, I don't hit you" or even "hitting is unacceptable, and if you do it again blah blah blah" but she just says sorry and I won't do it again, but she always does. I don't know how to discipline this child, she is so headstrong! The thing is, I could accept it more as just part of development and learning if she didn't do it all the time in front of so many people. I don't want to care what people think, but it looks like firstly I'm a terrible parent who can't control my kid, and secondly I have a horrid child. She is a good kid most of the time, but out of my 2 she is very intense and is such hard work sometimes. Has anyone else out there been in my shoes? How do u handle??

It's a behaviour management technique. I use it in the classroom. It's hard to summarize but it's available as an iBook on iTunes.
