Default Birthday Activity Ideas for 5 year old

Okay...so DS is turning 5 very soon and we are not doing party this year, but still want to make it special. We are thinking either a family activity or an activity that he can do with a couple of his friends.

Preferably not ten pin bowling - DH hates it and I don't like the idea of wearing communal shoes/fungus (OCD).

Thinking perhaps putt putt, or horse riding...any other ideas?

Thank you - I like the rock climbing thing - but not sure on ages - will look into it a bit more. I don't mind if DH does a dads/sons thing, as long as DS enjoys himself!

Edit: just checked - it's for 6years and up.
