    Default Bacon in Carbonara

Hi Girls, I'm 8 weeks pregnant and stressing out a bit about food. I think I know most of what I can and can't eat but I'm confused about the bacon in Carbonara sauce. A friend made us dinner using a pre made sauce, the one you get in the fridge section in Coles and I noticed it has bacon in it but don't know if it comes cooked? He just microwaved the sauce as the instructions say then stirred it through the pasta. The bacon looked quite raw so I didn't eat it, could you still get food poisoning from eating the sauce?

I would doubt it. Ask your doc though. I was under the impression that if it is hot, you can eat it.

This page might be helpful. Looks like deli meat is ok as long as it is recooked before you eat it.

Bacon is smoked so cooked already. It's the nitrates in bacon that they recommend avoiding but I've eaten it a couple of times.

They wouldn't put raw meat in a pre-made pasta sauce. I'm sure it was fine.

Bacon needs to be cooked before eating. But cooked cold meat is still a listeria risk, if it's hot it's ok.

I asked my doctor about bacon - coz one of my favourite pastas is full of it and I would struggle getting through pregnancy without it

Doctor told me that as long as it is hot bacon is fine - especially pre-packaged. Try to avoid it when it is from the deli though - just because you can't guarantee how long it has been out for.
