Can I genuinely ask, why do people have such massive issues with people seeking asylum here? I honestly don't understand it. It makes me really really sad.

Unfortunately, this is only the 2012 data. There should be some 2013 data out soon, which will indicate the numbers are increasing even faster.

Very good point VicPark ... especially if members would like to keep the thread open.

No more snide remarks or little digs ... debate the topic not the person

My issue is the way they come here we have laws in place and people should follow them

Contrary to what the media and the politicians of this country would have you believe, it is not illegal to seek asylum by whatever means. There are far more people overstaying their visas, which is illegal, than seeking asylum by boat.

The law states they are legally able to seek asylum. So how are they breaking the law? I am being genuine, I'm not trying to be smart, I really want to understand how people can be so unmoved by the plight of people fleeing war.

See, I'm with Annabella. I actually don't see why people have such a problem. I never have been able to though.

If it wasn't illegal to seek asylum why do they send them to detention centres

My views on asylums seekers changed when that boat crashed and so many died its not right to let people do that
