Default Have you given birth at Hornsby Public Hospital?

    Hi,

I've recently discovered that I'm 6 weeks pregnant I have private health insurance, however this bub is a bit of a surprise and we don't have any money saved. I was kind of shocked by how much OB's charge and that private health insurance doesn't cover it.

    So...
Have you given birth at Hornsby Public?
    What was your experience like?
Do you get your own room or share?
Can my husband stay overnight with me?
If I live an hour a way, can I still elect to go to this Hospital or will they not accept me? I live in between Newcastle and the Central Coast. I really don't want to go to John Hunter and share a room with 3 other mothers!

Any advise you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I am currently booked in with an OB from the SAN so may end up going private but would love to save the money if public is a good option.

    Thanks

I can't tell you about Hornsby but given your location, have you considered Wyong or Belmont? Its a bit closer than Horsby. Both have private rooms, I can't say anything personally about Belmont but Wyong is awesome. I am yet to actually give birth but everyone I've met there has been lovely and it's a really nice environment. Belmont works on the same system (continuity of care, mother-led birth) but they are both low-risk only.

Otherwise, I think Gosford has private rooms if that's the only thing you're worried about. But I have heard some not so good things. They are apparently a bit understaffed, bathrooms are a bit crappy and only one room has a bath tub if you wanted one.

Just a few other options that might be a bit closer than Hornsby.

Thanks for the reply! I guess my concern with Wyong and Belmont is if anything goes wrong, do they have the staff and equipment to handle it?

I gave birth at Hornsby hospital 3 months ago and was really happy with the experience I had. All the staff were wonderful, I never had to wait long for appointments and I was happy with my birth experience. It's fairly newly renovated and all the rooms are private, my husband was also able to stay overnight. Not to sure if you have to live in the area though. I was a little nervous about going public but after my experience I will be going public in the future.

They are run by midwives, no obstetricians on site but if they need to, they can transfer you. They told me the transfer rate at Wyong is around 11% and the number one reason is because you are not progressing. They tend to send you to Gosford before anything gets a chance to really go wrong but in the event of a real emergency the doctors in emergency are called in to sort it out.

It's a personal choice, obviously. Some people are uncomfortable with the idea of it being a midwife only unit, but for me, I think the environment is much more ideal for a straight forward birth than in a hospital environment. It's a lot more like being at home
