I remember talking to a woman that believed in getting infants ears pierced because they were less likely to play with them and get infected.

However, when she had her DD1, her partner kept resisting and she didn't feel she had the right to do so until he agreed also. He finally agreed with DD1 was 2yo, and they did get infected.

Then when their DD2 was 5mo, she was complaining that he was being resistant again. She wanted to get it done ASAP to reduce the chances of infection, whereas he was saying that since DD1 had got an infection perhaps they shouldn't do it at all. She wasn't happy because she thinks he is simply delaying until around 2yo or 3yo which she believes he thinks is the right time to do so.

My rule was she could when she asked.

At 2 she asked and I fobbed her off and she forgot about it. At 3.5 she asked again and then persisted when I tried to fob her off. So we got it done.

I'm happy with how it all went and couldn't care less what others think. There's heaps they do that I think is wrong too.
