Default How soon after getting car insurance can you make a claim?

If some IDIOT smashes into your parked car and doesn't leave any details or anything... so it's not your fault, but you don't know who did it... how soon after getting car insurance are you able to use YOUR car insurance to help pay to fix it?

I don't understand any of the car insurance stuff...

(This is on behalf of a friend who asked... not me or my car).

In theory immediately, should the insurance company be suspicious of the claim they can appoint an investigator to make sure its legit (and the damage didn't happen prior to the policy commencing).

Straight away unless the policy specifically states they don't cover it within the first 24 hours etc (eg malicious damages not covered within the first 24 hours). If it was just in a carpark, she should be fine

Immediately, though most insurance companies charge much higher excess in the first 3months of your policy.
