Default Help for cheap meat and veg

I really need to cut my shopping bill down and was hoping I could put a call out for anyone who knows of cheap butchers and fruit/veg places in Brisbane ( on the northside). I used to have a good cheap butcher on the south side but havnt been able to find one on this side. Any suggestions appreciated .

We go to meatcity at Morayfield (not sure if thats too far north for you?) We buy in bulk we eat only lean meat (except the odd sausage) so our meat shop usually consists of chicken breast and steak and we spend about 60-80 a fortnight.... I find buying in bulk saves alot of money

I don't have any advice on cheap meat and veg locations, but I can offer some hints on how to make chicken and minced meat last longer...

Some nights I cook a batch of mince, and save a portion of it for a different dinner like spag bol for the kids ( a mini version lol.)

For the chicken, the chicken thighs can be bashed out really thinly, and then crumbed. These can be stored flat in the freezer. My Nan taught me how to do this, you freeze only the portions that you need for 1 dinner, in seperate trays, they defrost quicker. 1 Chicken thigh an make 2 chicken shnitzels.

For rissoles. Buy 500gms of minced meat, any type I don't really take the quality of meat into consideration, I suppose leaner is better for you :P.
Add 1/2 a cup of oats, soaked in some milk, and 4 bread slices, add 1 or 2 eggs, 1 table spoon of self raising flour, another of plain flour, and mix.
You end up with literally double the quantity of rissoles. Oh, sorry forgot to mention 1 grated vegetable, such as carrot, or leftover zuchinni anything really.

I use up left over spinach (I freeze it sometimes), in soups, again here you can save money on chicken you only need a little of chicken in the soup.
I have seen free range chooks that are cheaper whole (from ALDI in Sydney), you can cut off pieces of the chicken to suit your meal...
Legs for a main dish, Breasts for another,..,. Then you are left with the carcus of the chicken, you can use this to make chicken stock, I am not Martha Stewart but boy does this save alot of money on free range chicken.

Hams, can be roasted and then sliced for sandwhiches..
Slow cooked meals are so delicious, if I make pigs in blankets my kids will eat so much of it, which means less for me. Lol. So yummy, and so easy!

Apple sauce, you can steam apples in a steamer and then just blend it all up, and voila! Apple sauce.

    Cheers.

try Pattons big gun butchers on Robinson rd at Aspley vilage. They do some really cheap fruit and veg and meat stuff from what I've seen. They also seemed to be an agent for the golden circle outlet items the last time I went there a few months ago, so there's some bargains on a lot of different grocery type items too.

There's also Warburtons meat on Graham rd at Carseldine which does some good bulk specials.
Hope that helps and they aren't too far.

Super butcher at eagle farm, I would suggest only buying the specials and get in early. When they have a sale it's a good sale ( mmm 2 for 1 eye fillet ) but also they often have super cheap mince and chicken, lamb chops etc
