I don't ever recall homework in the first year of school.

I didn't know any state had the first formal year of schooling with only 5 days a fortnight though.

    It's so confusing!

Too confusing....if it is the yr before grade one then that is prep and yes homework is normal, always reading every night plus sheet homework to be done during the week and handed in on Friday. But prep in qld is five full school days per week. Back when it was pre school it was five days per f/n but I thought that was all finished now?

We're in Tasmania and our 1st year of school is kindergarten - 5 or 6 days a fortnight for children 4 years old turning 5.

My DD3 goes 5 days a fortnight and doesn't get homework. In 4th term the teacher will give the option of taking a home reader home once a week. Prep and grade 1 they also have home readers (if you choose to read them). I'm more than happy to do the home readers, but actual homework - thats crazy!

I teach Kindy (the year before, the year before year one!) and we definitely don't give out homework. Sometimes we ask parents to practice a certain skill if their child is behind, like name writing or number recognition.

I'm in WA and kindy is two years before year one and 5 days a fortnight and neither of my two had homework other than one home reader a week. My DD is in year two and gets 2-3 worksheets per week with daily spelling words and nightly reading.

My preppie has "homework" but she loves it ( a home reader once a week and a letter of the week sheet) but she is the youngest of four and I think she thinks it is probably about time she had something like the other kids

But for kindy, no way (ie the year before Prep in Qld)
It won't/can't be compulsory so in all honesty I would just put it to the side for now

Kindy in NSW is the year before grade one. It's 5 days a week.
