it will depend on where you are zoned to go. I would check that out first before getting your hopes set on one hospital.

Monash is a specialist high risk centre, so unless you live very close to it or have high risk factors you cannot just "choose to go there".

Go and check your zoning and go from there.

I am really interested in Box Hill and like the idea of the KYM (Know your midwife) program, did you have midwife only care?

I did shared care with Box Hill and I loved it. They were so caring and supportive. My labour was very long but not once did they put me on the clock so to speak, they let things go naturally. There was a stage where they were getting a little worried about bubs heart rate and possibly needing a C-section but they calmly spoke to DF and I and made sure we knew exactly what was going on. It didn't come to a C-section but things did go wrong towards the end yet they still made sure we knew exactly what was going on even with 11 doctors and midwives running around the room. I cant praise the staff enough. One of my best friends did KYM through Box Hill and she loved it and it heading back there now with her second child.

Not sure if anyone's already stated this but Royal Women's is now zoned. So I'm assuming if you're out by Box Hill, unless you're high risk, Royal Women's won't be an option (and then they may send you to Mercy). It's only recently that they started zoning Women's, we live in St Kilda and a friend down the street went to Women's in 2010 but I wasn't allowed to in 2012 and was zoned to Sandringham (which was amazing).

If you are allowed to go to Women's, I have been a doula there and it is a fantastic hospital, I would recommend it. But keep in mind that the midwives can make or break your experience, so no matter what hospital you go to, if you don't like your midwife that is on duty then you may end up not liking the hospital. I've doula-Ed for women who loved Royal Women's and then others who have hated it and it was all dependent on their midwife. But overall it's a fab hospital.

I think if you're in Prahran (Stonnington) then you're zoned to RW. As I said above, I've been there for births as a doula and think its a great hospital. Some women haven't liked it but its usually due to the midwife they had on duty, which is an issue at any hospital (an awful midwife can ruin you're experience!).

Fairly certain Stonnington doesn't fall into Monash's zone and you won't be able to go there.

Thanks for all the responses so far, much appreciated!

I am in postcode 3181 but actually classed as Prahran east. I like the idea of Box Hill as we may be moving towards the end of the year and Box Hill would work location wise. I also like the idea of the KYM program. I am hoping to do the tour at Box Hill at the weekend.
RWs is an option but if we move it will be too far.

Has anyone moved zones during pregnancy?!

I didn't want box hill (my catchment) but because I went for a birth centre (at mercy in Heidelberg) they don't have a catchment and I got in fine. Good luck!
