I stumbled across a theory online the other day!

The theory was that Jon Snow is actually the son of Lyanna (Ned Starks sister) and Rhaegar Targaryen (Daenerys' uncle). The thinking is that Lyanna was promised to King Robert but ran of with Rhaegar to elope and before she died she made Ned promise to pass him off as his so that Robert wouldn't take revenge on Rhaegar and kill Jon ...

This is what I'm leaning toward

Yes, thats my fave theory. But with Ned dead who's left to confirm that theory? Howard Reed? Do we ever get to meet him? And he wasnt with Lyanna & Ned in the tower when she died, he was outside with the other Kingsguard.
And if Jon actually dies from the stabbing - will we ever find out or will it remain unanswered!?!?
Gah! Its doing my head in!

I'm about half way though Dance with Dragons too..there should be hints about the possible mother in a Davos chapter...just after he parts ways with his friend Saan.
I've been trying to work this out too but have stayed away from theories online. i do like the one commented on here, it does suit Ned's character

I definitely think Rhaegar is Jon's father...

Jon surely can't survive a stabbing like that? Unless he does a Catelyn Stark of course!

Been a while since reading the books, so memory a bit vague on what goes down on them. But my theory is definitely that Lyanna is the mother. DH & I think though that maybe Robert Baratheon was the father. Ned Stark would never have a *******, he just became guardian of his sister's child.

Wasn't there a hint in the books somewhere about his parentage by someone who had the same wet nurse as Jon Snow?

...yeah, "Wylla" the wetnurse. And Ned himself told Robert that his ******** mothers name was Wylla.

And I've read that Davos chapter where he's told "You were never here. Neither was Ned."

But despite the numerous references to Ned's mistress, i think these could all be dismissed as gossip.

The one arguement in favor of the Rhaegar-Lyanna theory that keeps me thinking it has to be them is this:
Lyanna Stark was alone in the tower guarded by 3 Kingsguards. Why? They are sworn to protect the royal family at all times. They were there guarding Lyanna while Aerys, Elia & her two children were killed. Jamie was left guarding Aerys. Why would those three white knights forsake their vows of guarding the royals in favor of guarding the Stark girl - unless they were actually guarding the life of her & Rhaegars lovechild?

I can see the Lyanna's child bit and promising her to look after him. It does suit Ned but as to the father. But eould the Prince have the power to control the kingsguard, the are meant to take orders from the king not Prince... and he is still a ******* his true born would be the one to protect.

Hmm. Well thats true. Althought, if the meeting between Aegon and Danerys goes sour, or if Aegon dies before Danerys takes the throne, Jon Snow wod still make a worthy match for her (although his bastardry would have to be pardoned).
