That means it wasn't a virus then, or the virus turned bacterial, otherwise the antibiotics would have done nothing.

My DD had been sick with a virus for a few weeks; I gave antibiotics and she was better within hours

My sister went to the DR's for a sore ear 2 weeks before we went Over seas to a third world country. She got given antibiotics and decided not to take them, she googled them and decided she knew better. She ended up in hospital over seas with a burst ear drum.

In my opinion, if a dr doesnt explain why, then i would get a second opinion. However, if a dr told me to take some antibiotics I would probably take them, in my experience the dr's i have been to are fairly cautious.

I hope your son is feeling better.

    .
Flying with an ear infection was what caused the burst eardrum.
