My son is in an out of area school...they get a lot of applications as they are a g&t school...they have a limit on how many they will accept.
We went on a tour with the deputy, explained why we were looking at them and why we were leaving our old school. I had his reports from his current school on me and all the paperwork needed to immediately enrol him. After the tour and talking with the principal we were offered a spot but had to wait 6 months for the new year to start as they were already at their current maximum.
Def go on a tour, put your reasons to match what the school offers (be it a difference in language taught from your "designated school", before/after school care, academic strengths, music or artistic difference, values difference) and state the reasons you think your child will be an asset to their school.
Also state what you and your DH could add to the community.
We are so glad we got him in to his new school...best thing we have ever done.
So glad you got him in. Hopefully it will make a difference on their side and on our side, inform us more about why we want that school if we go on a tour.
In our local schools it depends on how many local area students they get enrolled and classes they need for them first, then they fill up the holes with out of area, so they won't know til 4th term sometime.
