For what it's worth it wouldn't bother me if someone told me I was going to hell either. If someone told my child that - well that's a different matter, I'd be furious.

I'll be so busy catching up with all my friends when I go to hell I'll be too busy to be bothered.

Telling me I'm going to hell would offend me about as much as telling me I'm going to Neverland or Atlantis...

Haha.. I too am not fazed by the threat of being sent to a fictitious place.
I don't appreciate religious teachers telling my children that 'non believers' end up in hell though.

It does not make me any less secure in my beliefs whatsoever. I also have many friends (most of my friends) who do not believe the same as me, and we also discuss and debate out beliefs without being offended & we can still remain friends - but again, I do not tell them tht they are going to hell, and they do not tell me that I am stupid for believing in fairy tales. I don't think I would enjoy having a friendship where we spoke to each other so disrespectfully, tbh.
To be offended, I'd have to believe there was a chance it was true, you know? Like if I told you that when you die, you'd just cease to exist. Would you find that offensive, or would you just shrug, secure in your faith that you'd go to heaven?

Agree, children are much more impressionable.

It's wonderful that we're free to express our views. Regardless of this, some people's versions of expression often come as thinly veiled put downs and in a derogatory way which is designed to do little more than belittle.

When people choose to express themselves in this way, whether they are evangelist, antheist, agnostic, muslim, christian, jewish, whatever, it says more about their intentions than their argument.

By all means we should express our views, we all have them but I think words lose their power when used in an antagonistic, belittling or dismissive manner whether these words are fact or fiction.

Me too, think of all the interesting people you'll meet!

And I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Why would someone be offended at being told there will burn for eternity in hell be offended if they don't believe it exists? It's on a par with suicide bombers getting 72 virgins when they go to heaven. (I could never understand why someone would want virgins, surely they would want less virtuous women??)

If this is aimed at me then perhaps you are perceiving a tone that simply isn't there. Obviously it is very difficult to express tone - if any tone is to be perceived in my posts then I hope it is polite chit-chat as that is how I am talking through the posts in my head when I type.
