Definitely a Kirby for carpets, but they are a big vacuum. Otherwise you can't go wrong with a Dyson.

I have a Dyson DC29 barrel vacuum and absolutely love it. If you have pet hair on the carpet you'll probably need the power head (costs extra) or get the Dyson pet vacuum.

We have a Dyson and it's great on carpet, average on the stupid shag rug though.

I don't think anything will work good on a shag rug.. Nothing that I have tried anyway.

We only have a $200 one because our house is mainly tiles, but I do love Mum's dyson.

Can't go wrong with a Dyson! I've had mine for 12 years and it hasn't missed a beat. My mum got me the digital stick one for Xmas and OMG I'm in vacuum cleaner heaven!!!!! We've just moved to a huge house with lots of tiles and the stick is great for zooming around after messy boys (DH included!!). Love love love my Dysons!!!

We have a Dyson too and I agree it sucks on our shag rug but is amazing on carpet and tiles! We have the allergy one and it picks up dirt and dust that you physically can't see on the carpet, it's amazing how dirty your carpet can be when it looks reasonably clean!

I have a dyson and and love it. I am very sensitive to dust and would always have allergic reaction when ever I vacuumed until we got the dyson.
