Default Can I have a dental check-up or get work done while BFing?

Gawd, it's been sooo long since I've seen a dentist - really, my teeth should be all rotten and black and falling out hillbilly-style it's been that many, um, years... But I keep putting it off because every time I think about the subject, I'm either pregnant or BFing and tell myself, "Oh, they probably couldn't do anything until later in case the chemicals/drugs/etc harm the baby".

Anyone got any experience with this?

Not 100% sure but isn't it just the xrays you have to avoid?

Yes, you most definitely can and should go even if pregnant or breastfeeding. Best case scenario the check up will be all fine and nothing further necessary and you can tick the trip to the dentist of your list. Worse case, even if major work is required if you let your dentist know you are pregnant or breastfeeding they can work out the best course of action. Not ideal but I had to have root canal done during my last pregnancy including xrays (but fewer than they'd have done if I wasn't pregnant). A different anaesthetic was also used. I was uneasy about it but if I'd developed a serious infection that is potentially more harmful to an unborn bub. I've also had dental work done while breastfeeding and as far as I'm aware there is no problem with this. Any anaesthetic is local and I dont think would pass into the milk in any significant quantity but I'm happy to be corrected on this.

Yep, I went when DD2 was 8 months old. I had to have a wisdom tooth out with a local anaesthetic. I breast fed bub about an hour after, the dentist assured me it was fine.
