Right Lambjam I'm in a debate with my housemates over an ad.
The self managed super fund ad:
    - the guy says "Is a self managed health fund right for me?"
    - the text on screen says "Is an SMHF right for me?"

    So is that correct?

I'm not LJ, but I believe the text is correct because the acronym isn't being pronounced as a word.

If it was being pronounced as a word then it would be 'a'.

Of course all 'acronyms pronounced as words' have now abandoned my mind and i can't think of any!

Are you referring to the use of a or an? In this context I would use a. an sounds wrong

    Two schools of thought.

I would use "an" because "S" is pronounced "ess". Just like if I said "an essay due next week"

Lol okay yes I thought because when the guy spoke he would say the correct 'a' because 'a self' where as in the text you read it as 'an es em..'
But it doesn't look right so wondering if the 'an Es' is right or not?

'an' is generally used if the next word starts with a vowel. If the word starts with 'h' it gets a bit tricky. I think in this instance, 'a' is correct.
