I feel really blessed to have the option of being birthed by midwives only during my birth- if everything remains complication-free.

I certainly would consider the option of a private midwife if my MIL wasn't a midwife, I didn't have the service available at my (very) local hospital and funds were available to afford it.

$4-5 thousand sounds alot, but given the context of what we're talking about, I think you'd swiftly forget the cost with an outcome of having a highly experienced support person at your disposal through pregnancy and delivery.

    Default Midwives

Mine is covered by Medicare unless you choose home birth, which is $2000. Its so lovely to have her come to our house and know our background etc.

Im having a private midwife. All antenatal appointments are bulk billed through medicare. There is a once off $500 birthing fee to have her attend the birth at a public hospital. Medicare also bulk bill 6 weeks post birth care.

Wouldnt be without mine. I LOVE having her there ... ALL the time
Which crowd are you with? I have my first appt to discuss fees and my expectations at the end of the month with My Midwives ipswich.

I'm also from Melbourne and am working with Juliana from Mamatoto. We are planning a water birth at home, and are using a midwife from Midwives Naturally as our second midwife.

My GP was also very anti independent midwives (and home birth too), so I did my own research by going to the midwives in private practice webpage. They have a 'find a midwife' section. I just rang every midwife in my local area and I learnt a whole lot from that - including honest feedback about some of the other maternity options that I was considering. Many of them also have webpages which give links to the reasons why true continuity of care through a known midwife gives the best outcomes for mothers and babies. They can also give you their stats for intervention, c-sections etc (for home birth as well as independent midwife support in a hospital) which are fascinating to compare to the general hospital statistics.

Midwives have a strong philosophy that their role is to be 'with woman'. So I recommend you meet a few midwives and you will quickly pick which one you feel most comfortable being with. Strong collaboration with other midwives and medical professionals may also sway your decision.

If you want support from a private midwife in a hospital the cost will be about $2000-$3000 out of pocket after claiming back from medicare, depending on whether you do shared care or have all your appointments with the private midwife. A home birth is $4000-$5000 out of pocket as you are paying for a second midwife and all your care is provided by the midwives. If you are birthing in hospital, you could also consider a highly trained doula. It would depend on what kind of support you wanted - someone to advocate for your preferences and be a strong support (a doula can do this) or someone who has clinical knowledge as well as the above (then a midwife is who you are after, but at this point in time independent midwives do not have clinical rights in hospitals - hopefully this will change in the near future).

I have loved my appointments with my midwife - always on time, and usually an hour or longer to discuss a whole range of topics related to birth and parenting. My husband has also been actively involved in the process, with our midwife more than happy to pull out the model pelvis, placenta and baby to show him what the birth process is all about! Our midwife was also a godsend when we had an early miscarriage with our first pregnancy. The support at any time of the day was priceless.

Good luck with the decisions you make, but my biased opinion is that you won't regret getting an independent midwife!

I have hired a private midwife (granted I am planning a homebirth). But the continuity of care and the support I am getting is just brilliant! Definately worth it. Having that support is just a brilliant feeling. A doula is another cheaper option for birth support. They will help you advocate for what you want and be there as brith support.
