Default Only allowed on NT per year!

We lost our baby in June 2012 at 17 weeks. I am lucky enough to be pregnant again and have just had a NT done. I went in to claim the money back from Medicare only to be told that I can only have one of these tests done in a year. It is now up to me to go back to my doctor to prove that this is a different pregnancy. Don't they realise the only people this policy hurts is people who have lost babies after 12 weeks to still birth, miscarriage and medically necessary termination. This policy is ridiculous as you can only have the NT done between 10 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. I feel furious to have been put through this at a time when I could be celebrating my new baby not crying yet more tears for my loss. Has anyone else had this experience?

I'm so sorry for your loss hugs. That policy is so wrong on so many levels. Maybe advise your local federal member too of this ridiculous policy. Considering you also get a dating scan with it one would think this would be evidence enough that it's a different pregnancy.

This EXACT same thing happened to me too! I lost our bubs at 13 weeks after a 12 week scan in August last year and I am lucky enough to be expecting again and went to claim back from medicare and got the same story! The whole experience was dreadful - first I was told to claim online so I set it all up, waited a week for my password and then went in to be told that item couldn't be claimed online and to call their call centre to claim. I called and was on hold for 30 minutes before getting through and being told I couldn't do it over the phone, only in person I was more than a little annoyed that all the information I kept getting was wrong.
I finally got away from work to go down to the office to claim, had everything I needed and they told me I had already had this test done back in August last year. I was a little dumbfounded and had to explain this was OBVIOUSLY a new pregnancy as I couldn't still be 12 weeks pregnant 6 months later. The woman serving me went quiet for a moment and said again "But you have already had this test" I wanted to scream at her at this point. I told her bluntly that pregnancy was then lost and it was quite a horrible experience and this is now a NEW 12 week scan for a new pregnancy. The response I got was "Oh, well you will need to go back to your doctor to prove that". I didn't know what to say, she was actually looking at me like I was lying and making it all up... Don't you think if I was 9 months pregnant it would be a little more obvious?
Sorry to take over your thread, this was just something that really annoyed me and I get quite fired up about. I am going to put in a complaint, it really is a horrible thing to put someone through who has already gone through the loss and now has to provide proof that pregnancy no longer exists. Massive hugs - I say put a complain in, the more they hear from people the more they may actually think about how it affects us.

I am absolutely horrified to hear your story! I lost my pregnancy late last year shortly before I had a NT scan, otherwise I would soon be in the same position as you of having a scan for a new pregnancy within 12 months of the previous one.

The treatment that you have received at the hands of Medicare is nothing short of appalling. Losing your pregnancy is an emotionally gut-wrenching event, and the subsequent pregnancy is filled with lots of fear and anxiety. To then put women through the wringer over what has happened is not ust lacking in any kind of empathy, it is lacking in any kind of logic or sense.

Please, PLEASE do write to your local member. But don't stop there! Write to your state's (federal) senators as well, lodge a formal complaint with the Dept of Human Services, and if you feel up to it, let your local current affairs TV shows know about this. No-one should be treated so contemptibly.

Im hoping it got sorted OP. i really am sorry that they are bringing this up again.
Just a tip I work for local government. You will need to write to the correct level of government, otherwise nothing can be done ( esp it its different political parties at different levels) Medicare is a federal issue so only your federal member can do something about it.

I personally don't think the issue is with Medicare staff. Obviously there should be a cut-off period ie, no NT second NT scan within 3 months rather than 12.

I think doctors should be making their patients aware of this and giving patients a letter at the same time as the referral.

Same situation with the 20 week anatomy scan. My first baby was stillborn at 22 weeks and I conceived soon after, ended up having 2 anatomy scans in one year.

The lady in Medicare informed me it was 'impossible to need 2 of these in one year because you are pregnant for 9 months'. If only everyone was that lucky! I had to tell her the full story and then stand around while she rang the hospital and my OB.

I'm sorry for your loss OP.

We finally got the letter from the OB today, stating that this was a different pregnancy. My husband has dealt with it all because I just sitting there crying and I'm no help. He took the letter to the helpful Medicare office and had to fill in more forms. The lady has to send the form away and I guess we wait to see if we get anything back from Medicare. In my last pregnancy I had to pay for several of the scans because I had had more than the normal number, despite the fact that they were medically necessary i.e. had been having heavy bleeding and thought I was losing the pregnancy only two weeks after a dating scan. My main complain is lack of empathy from staff and that it is so hard to find out when things will be covered and how much of a rebate you get. Frustrating.
