Default Re: 'I knew it was wrong': Chrissie Swan admits to smoking while pregnant

I read that it was 5 cigarettes a day..not 1. Also read her quote that she gave up smoking with her first son yet not with this surprise pregnancy?

Default 'I knew it was wrong': Chrissie Swan admits to smoking while pregnant

Smoking is really, really addictive. Studies have shown it to be harder to kick than heroin- and we all know what that stuff can reduce a person to. To get down to 1-5 a day is a great effort from Chrissie. Cutting down is way better than nothing!
If you read the Wikipedia entry on nicotine, it explains how nicotine basically triggers a reward system in the brain, the part that regulates pleasure and euphoria. It's bloody hard to stop. For all those that quit cold turkey or never smoked a day in their life, good on you. I struggle to this day with wanting a smoke, though I haven't been a full time smoker for years. I was in labour with excruciating posterior baby contractions, writhing around in my seat on the way to hospital, less that two hours from giving birth, crying and moaning, when we stopped at a set of lights. The person in the car next to us was smoking. I immediately started moaning to my DH that I wanted a cigarette. I KNEW it would make me feel better. (No, I didn't have one, much as I thought I wanted one!)
In regards to Chrissie, I really think it's none of our damn business, it's her body, it's her choice and she has been vilified enough in the media for her choices. People can get all up on their high horses if they want to but the simple fact is, it is not illegal to smoke when pregnant. She hasn't broken any laws. She is fully cognisant of the risk, she has made a huge effort to cut down and has been publicly shamed. What more do people want of her?

I thought it was interesting that one of the presentors made a comment in the Morning Show saying that would we be as sympathic if it was Britney Spears caught smoking whilst pregnant? Probably not.

I am an ex-smoker and whilst I feel for Chrissie, I dont agree with her smoking. I know how hard it is to give up. I watch my Dad struggle with it daily. I watched my Oma die from Emphysema, I watched my Opa die from lung cancer so I know the risks of smoking and how hard it is to give up.

But saying that I think she should have tried harder. She was able to do it for her two previous pregnancies so why not this one?

I feel extremely sorry for her first they say she's too fat to be a mum and her kids are obese because of her & her husband! Ugh.. Wow something new to pick on her about.

I don't smoke but I do know the risks involved. It's silly to say 'she had a healthy baby and I didn't but she smoked'. Sometimes these things just happen for a reason, an unknown reason.

I hope she gets the support from her family, friends and whoever else!

Circumstances are different? Just because she may have been able to do it previously, doesnt mean she could do it again. Addiction is a hard thing to kick and the addiction of smoking has a strong hold on her. She said she was sorry and what not.

Best wishes for the rest of her pregnancy(i didnt even know she was pregnant til i read some of this thread last night)

To me it just seems she's sorry she got caught. Yes I do believe she feels guilt when she has a smoke but would she have admitted to it were it not for the photos?

I did smoke while pregnant with ds1 BEFORE I knew I was pregnant. As soon as I found out that was it. *I* could choose to smoke, my baby can't make that choice. But I did return to smoking after both my pregnancies.

I am not having a go at those who have struggled to give up. This is just my experience and opinion.

Default 'I knew it was wrong': Chrissie Swan admits to smoking while pregnant

I can honestly say I did many things that weren't by the book in each pregnancy.

I ate the occasional ham sandwich.
A few times I had to scoop out the kitty litter.
    I drank coffee, and cola.
I ate way too much junk food.
I even unknowingly used a nasal spray you aren't meant to use
Last pregnancy I had 4 glasses of wine throughout.
I took the wrong antihistamine by mistake.
    I didn't exercise enough.

    Judge away.

I keep reading 'if I did it, everyone should be able to' and your post sums it up best.

If Chrissie, or anyone, smoked the whole way through her pregnancy without even trying to quit then that is wrong. But she tried to quit and it's damn hard! I'm trying to quit smoking now... It's disgusting, unhealthy, expensive and unttractive but addictive.
The thing that people don't realise is that having a cigarette is associated with so many things in our day-to-day lives. You make a coffee, have a cigarette; you finish a meal, have a cigarette; you are stressed, have a cigarette... You get the gist. It's hard to break the habit, even if you are pregnant.
