Default Re: 'I knew it was wrong': Chrissie Swan admits to smoking while pregnant

I haven't read the whole thread but this is my thoughts....

I smoked when I was pregnant.
I really didn't want to but I couldn't help myself.

I spoke to my doctor and he said that as I am a smoker, perhaps I should cutback rather than quit, as quitting will stop the nicotine which the baby is used to and quitting would also cause the withdrawal stress to effect myself and the baby.

but you know what sh!t happens.
smoking was my choice and my son was born perfectly healthly and still is.

You are completely missing the point. If you don't want to educate yourself on the effects of smoking that's fine I won't bother with you, but don't argue something you don't understand.
Perhaps others do want to know though.
And I'm not suggesting that every baby born to a smoker will be born greately unhealthy, I never said that. If you think this is a good enough argument for someone to keep smoking I won't respect that.

What I'm reading is : I smoked and my baby was born healthy
This is saying that the risks are small or not there and clearly ignoring the effects of each cigarette on the body.
Not everyone who smokes will get cancer, we know that, so using it in an argument against the risks of smoking is poor. The above is saying the same thing.
Every cigarette is doing damage, this is not a lie. Your baby might not be born with a defect or anything visible, but they were ingesting poison while in the womb and being deprived of oxygen. This is a fact.

Default 'I knew it was wrong': Chrissie Swan admits to smoking while pregnant

I would say Chrissy is most def addicted, is trying hard and has cut down alot, but just can't push over the line and fully give up.
I guess I don't quite understand being addicted when you smoke such a small amount, especially if you have always been a casual smoker rather than full-time smoker. I smoke (quit date set for Monday though yay!!), and the nature of the addiction means that usually within a few hours of having a smoke, you are craving another one to get that nicotine hit again. If you can resist that, then are you truly addicted, or is it just a habit/mindset that is easier to overcome than an actual physical addiction?

I do understand how hard it is to quit fully though. I was a smoker when I found out I was pregnant with DS, drastically reduced how much I smoked for the first 3 months, and then after watching a doco about the effects of cigarettes on the baby in the womb, quit cold turkey. Didn't touch a single cigarette for 5 years...then stupidly took up the habit again a year ago *sigh*

Quitting is hard, really hard. Even when you know that you HAVE to quit, the cravings draw you back in. It's horrible to feel chained to a substance. So I do feel for her...

If you're going to argue and compare smoking and listeria risks I think it's relevant, because eating ham doesn't do the above. Every cigarette you smoke does do harm however.
If you know that what are you arguing without putting words in my mouth?

So bc lambjam is saying give her a break, she may not be making the best decision but she's been thru enough, that means she must have smoked during pg as well? Did I miss her saying she smoked during pg?

Yep I did the same except I didn't last 5 years. yep it's a terribly difficult addiction to kick.

I dont think so. I have never denied that what i did was bad for my child and myself.
I was well aware of exactly the damage i was doing and was unable to stop. Someone telling me how bad it was and all the technical stuff was not going to help. It would just make me feel even worse and i probably would have tried to hide it more.
My Dr also suggested that i just cut back and even told me to swap to rollies instead as he mentioned the same problem as PP. I still tried my hardest to quit and having a DR almost approving my smoking probably did not help me all that much.

Default 'I knew it was wrong': Chrissie Swan admits to smoking while pregnant

Funny people on here get all judgey judgey about controlled crying - something that remains debated in medical and psychological circles, yet when something that is universally accepted and proven to be unhealthy to unborn children, like smoking - and someone criticises them, these same people are happy to cry foul saying that those people who are 'on their high horse' or 'saying they're perfect'.

So it's not okay to teach a child to self settle when they are whinging so they can get the sleep their bodies need, but hey, it's okay that babies are subjected to passive smoking in the womb...?? Really?

Oh wait, that's right it's not the facts that are upsetting you (smoking kills, controlled crying doesn't) it's the fact someone disagrees with you!

PS no one put a gun to someone's head to make them smoke their first cigarette or to continue to the point of addiction, smokers make a conscious decision to start, if you get addicted, you can't blame anyone but yourself! Sorry.

Erm, that was the first time I responded to you...how am I putting words in your mouth? I never likened smoking risks to listeria risks....I also never argued that every cigarette is doing harm.
I asked if anyone had denied that statement...cos I havent seen it and was wondering if you had and could show me.
